Altoist Kim Richmond and his co-leader, trumpeter Clay Jenkins, contributed six of the nine songs to this sextet session. The originals and the improvisations are very harmonically advanced and thick with chords, while still swinging. The underrated tenor saxophonist Rich Perry takes many creative solos, as does Richmond, Jenkins, and pianist Harold Danko. While none of the originals are destined to become standards in the future, the music is still pretty simulating, with the standard "The Touch of Your Lips" being reharmonized. But it is when the group cuts loose on the closer, "Groovin' High," that the sparks really fly. This set grows in interest with each listen. ~ Scott Yanow

Crossweave songs
$13.45 Long one of the top arrangers in jazz, Bob Florence contributed seven inventive charts to five of his originals and two standards on this swinging, yet often complex, set and also takes "Never Let Me Go" as a sensitive piano solo. "Dukeisms," a lengthy piece commissioned to celebrate Duke Ellington's 100th birthday in 1999, has quotes from five Ellington pieces. Other selections include the cooking blues "Nerve Endings" (highlighted by Carl Saunders' trumpet solo), a sensitive reworking of "Chelsea Bridge," a fairly abstract "Kissing ...
| | Jim Rotondi Pleasure Dome CD (2004)
Crossweave album
$13.79 There's a lot to like about this session led by Jim Rotondi. This superb trumpeter, flügelhornist, and arranger is joined by a first-rate rhythm section (pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Joe Farnsworth), as well as the talented yet under-appreciated alto saxophonist Jesse Davis on five of the eight tracks.
The program itself is well balanced, with great blowing, imaginative charts
and a pair of strong originals. Rotondi's cooking "On Y Va (Let's Go)" is a brilliant opener, setting up a solid groove. "The Pleasure Dome" is his salute to the tiny but popular New York nightclub Smoke; it captures the excitement of a typical evening in this uptown venue.
"The Breeze and I" first turned up on a 1940 big band date led by Jimmy Dorsey and was later adapted by a few bop and ...

| | Andy Narell Tatoom: Music For Steel Orchestra CD (2007)
Crossweave music CDs
$15.65 A groundbreaking force in steel panning who has pretty much single-handedly forged a jazz-inflected genre all his own, Andy Narell again showed the world the vast potential of his chosen instrument on his 2004 album, The Passage; that disc featured a 30-piece steel pan orchestra from Paris called Calypsociation, in addition to jazz legends Michael Brecker, Hugh Masekela, and Paquito d'Rivera. While perhaps not as logistically complex in scope -- Narell sticks to three incredible soloists, Mike Stern, saxman David Sanchez, and percussionist Luis Conte to enhance his lively panning -- Tatoom was another forward-thinking set. Rather than record 30 pan players live, Narell meticulously recorded the six free-flowing ten-plus-minute tracks one instrument at a time. He began with computer sequences of the music, incorporated the hypnotic and joyfully aggressive drums of Mark Walker and Jean-Philippe Fanfant, then added Conte's congas and percussion. He then added an assortment of brake drums and cowbells, later his pans (one at a time!) and his solos, and finally the solos by Stern and Sanchez. Stern's are energetically played but, interestingly, somewhat distant in the mix on the shimmering and lively "Baby Steps" and spirited but slightly more brooding "Blue Mazooka." Sanchez's lyrical horn and passionate improvisation ...
