| | Rob Schneiderman Back In Town CD Rob Schneiderman Discography of CDs
An excellent modern mainstream pianist who is a bit taken for granted, Rob Schneiderman was actually one of the better jazz pianists of the 1990s. On Back in Town, he plays standards but often with subtle surprises. For example, the ballad "Darn That Dream" is taken up-tempo, Jobim's "A Felicidade" is stripped of its bossa nova rhythms, "Chega de Saudade" starts out much slower than usual, and the second half of Sonny Rollins' "Paul's Pal" becomes unexpectedly humorous. While the other performances are a bit more conventional, they are no less colorful and swinging. Schneiderman, bassist Boris Kozlov, and drummer Jonathan Blake form a tight trio and often think as one, following each other closely while creating satisfying modern jazz. ~ Scott Yanow
Rob's 9th CD for Reservoir Music heralds the pianist's return to the New York jazz scene after a six year hiatus, during which he obtained a Ph.D in mathematics at the Univ. Of California, Berkeley. Losing none of his musical skills in the interim, he di

$13.79 Anthony Wonsey was already one of the top pianists of his generation, but he developed his chops considerably over the five-year stretch since his previous date as a leader. In a trio set with bassist Richie Goods and drummer Tony Reedus, Wonsey delivers a mix of standards, classic jazz compositions, and his delightful originals, making for a well-paced CD. | | John Coltrane Traneing In CD (1957)
Back In Town CD music
$7.95 With this session, recorded in the summer of 1957, John Coltrane came out from behind the harmonic safety net of a three-horn frontline to focus on his own imposing gifts as an improviser. As the only horn on TRANEING IN, the young tenor giant revels in the spotlight, demonstrating some of the hard-won lessons from his long apprenticeship with Thelonious Monk's group that very summer at New York's Five Spot club.
Red Garland basks in the cruise-control cool of the Art Taylor/Paul Chambers rhythm team on the title tune, and his jaunty opening chords serve to italicize this blues' deep, deep groove. When Coltrane enters, the rhythm section ...
| | Big Broadcast Vol. 2 CD (2006)
Back In Town music CDs
$14.35 Producer Rich Conaty did an excellent job for this CD of gathering together mostly obscure recordings from the 1924-1937 period, finishing Big Broadcast: Jazz and Popular Music of the 1920s and 1930s with two unissued performances. Along the way is an excellent mixture of white and black bands, instrumentals and vocals. Whether it is the early scat vocal of Don Redman with Fletcher Henderson ("My Papa Doesn't Two-Time No Time"), some period but worthy singing from Scrappy Lambert, Rube Bloom's complex but catchy "Soliloquy," an alternate take of Cab Calloway's "Is That Religion," the great Marion Harris singing "Blue Again" or Garland Wilson's heated piano solo version of "Just One of Those Things," there is much to enjoy and savor throughout this strong sampler. Even veteran collectors will find some of these selections to be very rare, and Rich Conaty's informative liner notes are an added plus. This very enjoyable release is highly recommended for '20s collectors. ~ Scott Yanow
Rich Conaty has for over 30 years hosted the weekly New York City radio program The Big Broadcast on WFUV-FM. Since he features jazz and pop music from the 1920s and '30s on his shows, his CD compilations (of which this is the second) stick ...
