Includes a 40-page booklet. Personnel: Bing Crosby (vocals); Dinah Shore, Ella Fitzgerald, Jack Teagarden, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, The Andrews Sisters, Mills Brothers, Toni Arden (vocals); Les Paul (guitar); Joe Venuti (violin); Ziggy Elman (trumpet); Red Nichols (cornet); John Scott Trotter & His Orchestra, Jud Conlon's Rhythmaires. Liner Note Author: Ken Barnes. The public domain is well stocked with budget discs drawn from Bing Crosby's long radio career. Unfortunately, few are worth the plastic they're etched on, the usual problems including horrid sound quality and little in the way of documentation (regarding their origins) or context (regarding their relation to Crosby's career). Enter Shout! Factory to remedy the situation, hiring longtime enthusiast Ken Barnes -- who produced several sessions during Crosby's recording renaissance of the mid-'70s -- for the producer/compiler position and giving him free rein over the far-flung vaults of grubby transcription discs and tapes that comprise Crosby's radio career. The results, released as Swingin' With Bing! Bing Crosby's Lost Radio Performances, are splendid, offering clear proof of the opinion Bing Crosby fans have carried for decades: that transcriptions are a better source (or at least a more consistent one) to hear Crosby's swing smarts. Barnes paces the program with the touch and feel of an expert, selecting tracks from a wide range of time (a full decade of the postwar period) and tying them together with just a few interstices and crowd noise. (His instructions to audio restorer Peter Reynolds included "finding matching applause for the topping and tailing of each selection to give the feeling of a total production.") While the process may not be historically accurate, it makes for a wonderful program that delivers incredible performances and avoids the pitfalls of a usually exhausting 75-track box set. Many of the highlights come on the first disc with looser versions of his hit standards "Swinging On a Star" and "Don't Fence Me In." The final two discs are devoted to duets -- a staple of Crosby's show -- and include performances with a succession of old friends: Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Jack Teagarden, Joe Venuti. Aside from the material, the set offers excellent fidelity and an overall sympathetic compilation to make the process of listening to a lengthy selection of Bing Crosby's non-studio sides smoother than it's ever been before. ~ John Bush This beautifully packaged Bing Crosby box set is divided into three parts. The first disc features Crosby in radio performances with Nat "King" Cole and the Andrews Sisters. Disc two documents broadcasts with Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, and, finally, the third disc features additional Crosby collaborations with Fitzgerald and Armstrong, as well as two performances with the Mills Brothers. One of the highlights on this collection is the second rendition of "Memphis Blues," a tune Crosby shares with Fitzgerald and Armstrong. Here, the rapport between the three singers is relaxed and lighthearted, and Armstrong even causes the studio audience to crack up during one of his verses. "Basin Street Blues" is another wonderful example of the simpatico between Crosby and Fitzgerald. At Crosby's request, Fitzgerald imitates Armstrong to the bemusement of the audience, and Red Nichols takes a superbly bluesy cornet solo on this tune, as well. (Not surprisingly, Nichols's playing is very influenced by the swampy, New Orleans approach of Armstrong.) Cole Porter's hit "Don't Fence Me In" is another high point; this song combines 1940s swing with a Western feel (a la Gene Autry), and the Andrews Sisters' rich three-part harmonies add great depth to this selection. Of course, it's Crosby's debonair voice that ultimately steals the show.

| Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) The 'Original' is still the BEST! I'll admit I'm bias, just about anything with Bing Crosby in it has to be a class act. And 'Swing With Bing' the so called 'lost' radio performances is no exception. Not so much lost, just not widely available, and although it's not all 'swing', lots of ballads also, but when it does 'swing', vocally, no one does it better than Bing. Hell, this guy invented 'POP' music, and despite the fact that over the decades it's gone through many changes, later 'Kings' like Sinatra & Presley, have all borrowed something from the original "King" Bing. If it's possible, Bing always seemed even more relaxed on Radio, especially when he worked with other greats like Louis Armstrong, Ela Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole etc. If you like Good Music, Real Music, the way it used to be, you wont be disappointed in this one. Sing Bing, Sing! Submitted by girvsjoint (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Stephen Hawking Eat Your Heart Out Stephen Hawking should simply place these wonderful discs into his music system and he will take a fantastic journey into the past. A time when life was simpler and Bing was the King.
I was only born in 57 but these songs and the radio atmoshere they present is like stepping back 50 years into the past. And the sound quality is first rate too! Worth every penny, let's hope there will be another volume or two. Submitted by neil.thompson (Northumberland, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Most comprehensive Crosby radio set available! This is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive look at Bing Crosby's radio work that has ever been produced. And there was no better man to tackle the job of compiling it all than Ken Barnes. Ken's production values and attention to detail are extraordinary. If Ken's involved with a project, you can be assured the results will always be outstanding and top notch. It's a pity that Bing Crosby never made a commercial recording with the great Ella Fitzgerald, whom Bing cited on numerous occasions as his favorite singer. But we're fortunate Bing had her as a guest on his radio shows often, and that Ken has painstakingly assembled all of their extant duets together for this album. Not only that, but you also can revel in classic live performances pairing Bing with Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, the Andrews Sisters, the Mills Bros. and more. If you want to hear the ultimate crooner, live and in his prime, this is the one CD set with which to begin your journey into the realm of Crosbyana. A detailed and informative booklet is included with the set. It's heavily illustrated with many rare and previously unseen images. So go on, take a chance. Purchase this set at once. I guarantee you the magic of Bing captivate you as it has so many others for so many years. Submitted by Greg Van Beek (West Bend, WI USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
