Personnel: Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet); Dizzy Gillespie; Ed Cherry (guitar, electric guitar); Sayyd Abdul Al-Khabyyr, Sayyd Abdul Al-Khabyyr (flute, tenor saxophone); Michael Howell (electric double bass); Tommy Campbell (drums). Liner Note Authors: Len Dobbin; Len Dobbin. Recording information: The Rising Sun Celebrity Jazz Club, Montreal, Canada (07/1981). Author: Rouč-Doudou Boicel. Dizzy Gillespie is in better than usual form on this previously unreleased club date from 1981. The trumpeter's repertoire is streaky, with an overly long "On Green Dolphin Street" never really stating the melody or developing, and a "Blues Theme" being rather aimless. "Salt Peanuts" gets some sparks flying before the band runs through a typical version of the comedy number "Swing Low Sweet Cadillac." The second half of the disc, with excellent versions of "Land of Milk and Honey," "Tin Tin Deo," and the old standby "A Night in Tunisia," has the meat of the CD. The pianoless quintet has a sparse sound, with the underrated Sayyd Abdul Al-Khabyyr playing some fine tenor and flute solos and guitarist Ed Cherry getting his spots. The overall results are not quite essential but are worthwhile due to Dizzy's excellent late-period playing. ~ Scott Yanow Dizzy Gillespie Salt Peanuts Songs Salt Peanuts Review

$16.45 Charles Blenzig is a pianist, composer, arranger, and percussionist who slips effortlessly among musical styles while retaining his own distinct sound. Born in the Bronx, raised in Pelham, and now residing in Queens, he has been a part of the New York City jazz scene for over 20 years. The first real visible gig for Charles was as a member of the Gil Evans Orchestra that had a steady Monday night engagement at Sweet Basil Jazz Club in New York City. He was fortunate to play with New York's top musicians George Adams, Hiram Bullock, Mark Eagan, Gil Goldstein, Lou Soloff, Kenwood Denard and Alex Foster. It was here that he got the chance to unlock the mysteries of one of the finest arrangers in the history of Jazz: Gil Evans. In 1990 he was offered the position of musical director for singer/songwriter Michael Franks, a position which he still holds. Working with Mr. Franks has led to performances and television appearances throughout the world including Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Africa and Russia. Most recently, Charles produced and arranged Michael's recording Watching the Snow as well as co-writing the title track to Michael's CD entitled Barefoot on the Beach. During the mid 1990's the keyboardist performed regularly with several groups including Bill Evans and Kenwood Denard. Both stints led to recordings: Bill Evans and "Push" Live in Europe and Kenwood's Just Advance which featured bass virtuoso Marcus Miller. Over the years Charles has worked with many accomplished musicians and groups including Larry Coryell, Michael Urbaniak, Michael Brecker, Joe Beck, The Mingus Big Band, Joe Locke, Eddie Gomez, Randy Brecker, Toninio Horta, Grady Tate, Buster Williams, Roy Ayers, John Patituchi, vocalist Patti Austin, and Latin Jazz legend Gato Barbieri. On the international circuit, Charles has toured and recorded with renowned Korean guitarist Jack Lee, Japan's premiere ...

Twisted Sister: Dee Snider (vocals); Jay Jay French, Eddie "Fingers" Ojeda (guitar, background vocals); Mark "The Animal" Mendoza (bass, background vocals); A.J. Pero (drums, background vocals). Recorded at The Sol Studio, Bershire, England. From the solid sales of their independently released debut album, 1982's Under the Blade, New York's Twisted Sister were finally rewarded with a major record label contract, courtesy of Atlantic, who issued their first domestic release, You Can't Stop Rock & Roll, a year later. The album followed the same raw heavy metal direction of their debut, and was even more consistent from a songwriting and performance standpoint. Several of Twisted Sister's best anthems reside here -- the title track (which was one of the band's first videos to be aired on MTV), as well as "The Kids Are Back," "We're Gonna Make It," and "I Am (I'm Me)." But besides a ballad that vocalist Dee Snider wrote especially for his wife, "You're Not Alone (Suzette's Song)," the album is comprised of 100 percent heavy metal -- "Like a Knife in the Back," "Ride to Live, Live to Ride," "I've Had Enough," and "I'll Take You Alive." The 1999 CD reissue included three bonus tracks not included on the original: "One Man Woman," "Four Barrel Heart of Love," and "Feel the Power." Eventually certified gold in the U.S., You Can't Stop Rock & Roll set the stage perfectly for their next release, 1984's breakthrough Stay Hungry. ~ Greg Prato Although New York's Twisted Sister wore makeup and stage costumes, the group was completely unlike other glam-metal bands of the ...

Recorded at Jack's Tracks Recording Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. "Squeeze Me In" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Country Collaboration With Vocals. Garth Brooks had a real hard time in the latter half of the '90s, running through a couple of muddled near-crossover records before diving off the deep end with the extraordinary In the Life of Chris Gaines. Following that historic bellyflop -- few albums in history have been as misconceived and as widely rejected -- Brooks took some time off, retreating from the spotlight (which was particularly helpful when he divorced his high-school sweetheart) and laying low until late fall of 2001, when he returned with Scarecrow. The extended time off turned out to be a blessing, ...
