| | Justin Vollmar 13 Or So People Who Need Chances CD Justin Vollmar Discography of CDs
Justin Vollmar's second album is folksy, on-the-porch or around-the-campfire singer/songwriter music. There's a difference between this and most such music that fell into this description prior to the 21st century, for Vollmar espouses a vulnerability and quirky introspection largely missing from the music made at most informal social gatherings. There's a lo-fi ambience reminiscent of numerous records that have come out on labels such as K or Knw-Yr-Own, as if it was done in a bedroom on a cheap home recorder rather than in a studio (which, for all we know, might have been the case). Primarily sticking to just a sole acoustic guitar or a sole electric guitar for accompaniment, with occasional rustling or howling noises in the background (as well as an instrumental for toy piano and found sounds), it's got the minimal charm of naive art, put across by the artist's bemused, fragile voice. Like many such recordings, though, it's not necessarily something that demands getting released, or intended to be heard by a wide audience, though it's pleasingly winsome for what it is. And as integral as the skeletal arrangements are to the bare-bones atmosphere, when some non-guitar instrumentation augments the closing "Lucy of the Blue Hills," you wonder if at least some of the material might stand to benefit from even a mild boost in fullness. ~ Richie Unterberger 13 Or So People Who Need Chances Music Justin Vollmar 13 Or So People Who Need Chances Songs | 1. | Who Have You Never Spoken With (Spilled Upon the Ground) |

| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
13 Or So People Who Need Chances
$11.99 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful ...

| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
13 Or So People Who Need Chances
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, ...
