Medeski, Martin & Wood: Chris Wood (bass guitar); John Medeski, Billy Martin. Personnel: Marc Ribot (guitar); Briggan Krauss (saxophone); Steven Bernstein (slide trumpet); John Medeski (keyboards); Billy Martin (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Marc Ribot. Audio Mixers: Chris Shaw ; John Stanley King . Recording information: Shacklyn Studios, Brooklyn, NY; The Medina, Los Feliz, CA. Photographer: Danny Clinch. More than a decade into their career, Medeski, Martin & Wood continue to expand their sound. This time out, they've enlisted John King (Dust Brothers, Beck, Beastie Boys) as producer and engineer, and he brings a left-field pop sensibility to the table without ever sacrificing the personality and energy of the band. OK, it's not really "pop," but the songs themselves are less overtly "out" than the last couple records despite some wicked, nasty, wonderful tones. The new sound is a thick one, with lots of different layers and perhaps the largest keyboard arsenal ever assembled. On the first track alone, "Anonymous Skulls," you can hear just about every keyboard sound known to man, but it never gets too busy or claustrophobic. In fact, it's almost like the overdubbing process made them more aware of the tunes themselves rather than just the playing, making the songs particularly focused. It's easy to tell this is MMW, with Chris Wood's rich basslines, John Medeski's often percussive virtuosity, and Billy Martin's easily identifiable beats, but all the different layers and bits of ear-candy details really add a new element to the sound. There's also the fairly prominent use of Mellotron, which adds great texture, especially in the sometimes abusive hands of Medeski, who really demonstrates knowledge and mastery of every different keyboard and keyboard style. Forsaking the plethora of guest stars of the last two albums, the only guests are Marc Ribot (on four tracks) with the Sex Mob horns (Steven Bernstein and Briggan Krauss) joining on one of those. Ribot plays with perhaps his thickest, most distorted tone on record on "New Planet," and really lets it rip on "Queen Bee." End of the World Party (Just in Case) is probably the most intricately assembled of the MMW records, but the grooves are still unshakable and the bottom line is that they're still a great band. The fact that they continue to push their sound, even enlisting an almost mainstream "rock" producer to spice things up, is almost a victory in itself in the generally too-safe world of jazz, but the real success is that they keep putting out great records. This is no exception. ~ Sean Westergaard This 2004 Blue Note release by Medeski Martin & Wood is yet another example of this band's ability to create infectious grooves and fascinating tonal colors. This is not jazz, per se; MM & W frequently blur genre lines, experimenting with a variety of styles and sounds. On END OF THE WORLD PARTY (JUST IN CASE), the trio continues in its quest for funky beats and intriguing soundscapes. "Shine It" and "Curtis" have a 1970s retro feel, and on these selections, the group uses a Fender Rhodes, a wah-wah pedal, and earthy drum sounds. In contrast, "Anonymous Skulls," and "End of the World Party" boast state-of-the-art, high-voltage energy. On these tunes, keyboardist John Medeski uses atmospheric sound effects to swirl around the melodies, generating strange, cacophonous noises. Labeled as a jam band of sorts, Medeski Martin & Wood stand out among their peers because of their attention to detail; their grooves are contagious, and they infuse their music with lots of uniquely quirky timbres and textures.Down Beat (p.68) - 4 stars out of 5 - "The vamps are more limber, the sonic sculptures are more thoroughly conceived and the breadth of melodic ideas is more far-flung." JazzTimes (p.86) - "MMW show once again that retro and modern, analog and cyborg, can flow quite naturally in the same musical sentence." Mojo (Publisher) (p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[M]arrying offbeat jazz with skewed dance beats, spacey loops and amorphous soundscapes....The soundtrack to one hell of a party." Best MMW album ever Medeski Martin and Wood is a band that always love to experiment allbum after album after album. But hearing this CD just blew my mind away. This is defintely a band that creates new sounds and always gets better in the recent years. With Marc Ribot playing in 4 tracks and the other musical guests playing on this CD (Steven Bernstein, Briggan Krauss and John King), this album is definitely a great buy. Far out.. I picked this up right after it came out, and keep in mind I already owned 4 MMW cds at that point. This is without question a completely necessary addition to your collection. If you like MMW, you'll like this. It's different, and it's a lot more edgier. It's definitely not the "MMW we know", but it's just as groovy and just as sweet. "Reflector" and "Queen Bee" are totally far out tracks with Marc Ribot. Enjoy! Submitted by imustbejosh (omaha,ne) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
5 out of 5!!! This album is hot as hell!! MMW is always doing something unique on every album they put out. This is a much tighter album then the ones previously released. Love the first 3 tracks... Submitted by Chris (New York, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Medeski or not? This album is definatley a step towards the more mainstream. Is MMW possibly trying to broaden their fanbase? I like the album (especially the tracks with Marc Ribot) and the producer but I cant help but feel that this is not the Medeski, Martin, & Wood that I know. $12.75 Hayden is a Toronto musician who's been releasing records for ten years. His international debut "Everything I Long For" (Geffen) was released in 1996 after initial attention in Canada following two cassettes and several 7-inch singles. The album's home recorded songs appealed to critics and fans alike, making many year- end top ten lists. Following tours of the U.S, Europe and Japan, Hayden released "The Closer I Get" (Geffen) in 1998... a more band oriented affair and a sonic and lyrical progression.
