The title makes it plain: coming quickly after 2003's muddled, unfocused Self Titled, Rebirth is AWOL One's hitting of the reset button. It's a much stronger collection of songs overall, and the album's high points are among the best things AWOL One has ever done. The creepy "Flying Spiders" has a woozy, almost psychedelic feel akin to early De La Soul filtered through a bongload of cheap weed, and "Sum Times" puts a hypnotic sung hook and laid-back rhythm against some of the most impassioned verses on the album. The album isn't a total winner, since there's an unfortunate lack of variety in the album's pacing and flow, putting too many sleepy-tempo tracks in a row near the center. However, things improve toward the end, thanks to "Agony Ximer," which features sharp lyrics and a maddening, piercing keyboard hook, and the extended jazzy groove of "Upside Down 6." Slanguage is still AWOL One's career high point, but Rebirth is an impressive bounce back. ~ Stewart Mason

Rebirth
$5.49 OFF THE WALL remaster contains previously unreleased demos and commentary by producer Quincy Jones and songwriter Rod Temperton.
Recorded in Los Angeles, California between 1978 & 1979. Originally released on Epic (35745).
Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California).
As the lead singer of the Jackson 5, Michael Jackson had already been labeled a legend at a young age; but OFF THE WALL introduced the world to the adult Michael Jackson, and proved that he was still very much worthy of that label. It was the real beginning for Michael as a solo artist, and opened the doors for his next album THRILLER, which would become the greatest selling album of all time and help foist upon a Jackson a new title: King Of Pop.
Under the supervision of Quincy Jones, OFF THE WALL illustrated some of Jackson's most soulful material. The title-track is among the album's smoothest, and introduces his silky feel ...
| | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Rebirth
$14.39 Shakira's brand new English album She Wolf is an uptempo pop album. It is all about synthesizers and electronic concepts, all mixed with the world sounds that we are used to from Shakira.. sounds from countries like India, the Middle East and her home country of Colombia. She Wolf features a predominantly English track list with a follow up album of new and unique repertoire in Spanish to come in 2010. The title track "She-Wolf " boasts the infectious and energizing sound that made Shakira a household name, with a slightly more dancey/ electronic beat (about 125 beats per minute). Though most tracks on the upcoming album will be in English, Shakira chose to service the Spanish version of the first single, "Loba", two weeks before the English single is launched.

| | Very Best Of The Spinners CD (1993)
Rebirth
$8.19 The Spinners were rivaled only by the O'Jays as the greatest Philly soul group, and for that matter the greatest vocal group of the '70s. For listeners who don't want to dig as deeply as the excellent double-CD anthology One of a Kind Love Affair, Rhino's The Very Best of the Spinners is a stellar single-disc career summary that offers a concentrated dose of the group's sweet soul magic. It also serves as a primer on the best work of Thom Bell, Philly soul's "other" great producer besides the legendary Gamble & Huff team. Incredibly, every one of the 16 tracks here -- culled from 1970-1980 -- reached the R&B Top Ten, and half went all the way to number one on either the pop or R&B lists. As this collection demonstrates, the Spinners' massive popularity was well-deserved. Built around the magnetic leads of Philippe Wynne, their records were tastefully, elegantly romantic, full of adult heartache and longings as complex as the group's shifting harmonies. The compilers also license the pre-Wynne Motown hit "It's a Shame," co-written by Stevie Wonder, and include two disco-tinged medleys ...
| | Stevie Wonder Songs In The Key Of Life CDs (1976) Remastered
Rebirth
$15.09 Aired on VH-1 and PBS, the video of SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE includes new interviews, performances, and additional footage not previously seen.
SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE is a milestone in Stevland Morris' career and a masterwork of American popular music. Released in 1976, this double LP spent 14 of its 80 charting weeks at number one. From his sharp commentaries on American social history and pro-peace supplications to some of his most intimate professions of love, witness Stevie Wonder at a prolific point in his career, casting his music further beyond R&B, funk, and disco than ever before.
Present here are some of Stevie's greatest hits in their original context: the widely-sampled horn swirls of "Sir Duke," comical baby-noise-laced jamming of "Isn't She Lovely" and fiercely poetic declaration of "As" still shine as brightly as ever. Perhaps less well-known are tunes like, "Joy Inside My Tears," a slow, entrancing, synth-vamp on love's redemptive powers, or the fast-grooving funkout, "Black Man," a compelling ...

Rebirth
$16.95 As a trawl through the recesses of the Columbia vaults for obscure non-hit 1960s records in the girl group style, or at least bearing girl group influences, this is a mighty impressive labor of archivism. Only a few of these 26 tracks are by singers with major or modest reputations, those including obscurities by Aretha Franklin (a pre-stardom 1965 single, "Sweet Bitter Love"); the 1968 single "The Right to Cry" by her sister, Erma Franklin; Doris Day's "Let the Little Girl Limbo," not even released until 1997; and Laura Nyro's "Spanish Harlem," which isn't all that obscure, but what the hey, it fits, just about. There are also a couple of little-known outings by singers much better known as actresses, those being a 1967 single by Bernadette Peters and a 1968 cover of Gerry Goffin and Carole King's moody "Wasn't It You" by Peggy Lipton. The CD's also dotted with obscure songwriting efforts by the likes of Neil Diamond, Al Kooper, Barry Mann & Cynthia ...
