Luni Coleone Classics
$13.09 As Lil Jon was to the crunk movement centered around Atlanta, so Keak da Sneak is to the hyphy scene in California's East Bay. That sounds like an oversimplification, but it's a comparison that works on every level. Keak da Sneak has been one of the mainstays of Oakland's hip-hop scene since the late '90s, slowly developing a signature sound of minimalist, grinding beats built mostly from thumping beatboxes and all-low-end synths. Just as Lil Jon coined (or at the very least popularized) the term "crunk" and almost single-handedly invented the musical style associated with it, Keak da Sneak is credited with creating the term "hyphy" (a multi-purpose word covering a wide variety of outlandish behaviors) and has shepherded just about every artist who has used the term. Just as importantly, Keak da Sneak's gravel-throated growl of a voice (imagine Redd Foxx as an MC) is just as novel and immediately identifiable as Lil Jon's one-syllable yelps. That said, Kunta Kinte showcases Keak as a stronger and more varied producer ...

$6.79 With his fourth release, NASTRADAMUS, this lyrically inclined street poet further stands his ground in hip-hop. Though his previous two albums surpassed the commercial success of his first album, neither was as critically acclaimed. But on NASTRADAMUS, Nas comes close to the feel of his classic debut, ILLMATIC.
Though there are hype party cuts like "Nastradamus" and "You Owe Me," it's the underground tracks where Nas kicks street-inspired rhymes that make NASTRADAMUS a hip-hop necessity. On tracks like "Life We Choose" and "Project Windows," Nas stays true to his original audience with picture-painted rhymes and theme-inspired production. He is joined by Mobb Deep, Ginuwine, and Ron Isley for a handful of memorable collaborations. An extremely talented lyricist, Nas manages to never run out of rhymes. His music transcends every last category of hip-hop and, thus, balances the scales of hip-hop.

Luni Coleone Classics
$10.59 Mere months after its release, Jay-Z pared down his platinum-selling BLUEPRINT 2: THE GIFT AND THE CURSE to fit on one disc featuring his most solid material. While the original Part 2 of BLUEPRINT was hardly rife with filler (and impressive in that lack), when the strongest tracks are culled an even more powerful, sharper record emerges. Jay-Z still leads off with the provocative "A Dream" which not only features a mock discussion with Biggie Smalls during which the late rapper approves Jay-Z's skills, but directly samples a bit from the legend's hit "Juicy." Of course "Bonnie & Clyde '03," the ubiquitous hit-single duet with Beyonce Knowles, shows up a few tracks later. Then the listener benefits from not having to switch discs and wait for easily the most stunning track, "Guns & Roses," with its Cake sample and Lenny Kravitz guest vocal. ...
