(1 Customer Review)
A nice compilation of the ultra-varied career of Manu Dibango. The disc jumps from era to era comfortably, but hits upon almost every phase Dibango passed through (with the surprising exception of the original "Soul Makossa"). The album starts out in his early years with a sax-saturated ska in "Ngolowake," moving to the solo marimba work, a smooth jazz-esque version of "Nature Boy," and an orchestral work from his early days. Also included are pieces from the makossa days, contemporary R&B, urban grooves and more. The album ends with a contemporary remix of "Soul Makossa" and "Big Blow," with Bill Laswell and Herbie Hancock taking the sideman roles. Dibango has an über-impressive resume, and this is one of the better collections to introduce listeners to the variety present. ~ Adam Greenberg

| | Rahul Sharma Akaash CD (2005)
Rough Guide To Manu Dibango album
$15.15 This recording marks the coming of age of a young maestro who is now firmly established as one of the most popular attractions on the Indian classical music circuit. Since 1996, the gifted Rahul Sharma has shared the stage with his father and mentor, Shivkumar Sharma delighting crowds in all corners of the world with their duet performances known as jugalbandi. That process has been an essential part of the grooming of young raw talent into a mature artist.Having won over the plaudits Rahul has now declared that his life's priority is to popularise Indian classical music itself. He is well aware that his task has been made lighter through the endeavours of his father, Shivkumar Sharma who has transformed a folk instrument, whose use was confined to the valleys of Kashmir, into a fully fledged classical ...
| | Marcel Khalife Taqasim CD (2006)
Rough Guide To Manu Dibango CD music
$17.19 A master instrumentalist on the oud, Marcel Khalife uses this sets of taqasims, or improvisations, to pay homage to the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. And, it has to be said, he does him proud in three long pieces that swing through an exquisite series of moods and show the range of his playing, from subtle little fills to wild strumming. It helps that he's backed by two very sympathetic musicians on bass and drums, as adventurous as he himself is. They have their moments to shine solo, but it's when the trio works together that the magic really comes through. It might seem odd to celebrate a poet, a man of words, with music and no lyrics, but what's on offer here is as eloquent and beautiful as any verse. This is an album that give Khalife total freedom, and he draws upon all his knowledge and skill to turn in the performance of a lifetime. ~ Chris Nickson
