| | Jimmy Smith Boss CD Jimmy Smith Discography of CDs
(5 Customer Reviews)
The trio setting abets the reserved vibe here; there is an almost chamber-jazz feel at times, as Smith and Benson trade leads, while Bailey keeps the ship steady. Smith's mastery of the keys unfurls itself in flurries of activity (especially on the swirling clouds of sound on the title cut), and Benson's beautifully phrased solos remind listeners that he was a fine straight-up jazz player (before moving into commercial pop in the later 1970s and '80s). While not as hot and sweaty as some of Smith's output, THE BOSS's grooves are no less admirable (or intense) for their measure and grace.
This Verve reissue captures Hammond organ master Jimmy Smith, guitarist George Benson, and drummer Donald Bailey performing live in 1968 for a fun-loving crowd at an intimate club in Atlanta, Georgia. As per usual with Smith, the fare is bluesy soul-jazz par excellence, with a warm feeling reminiscent of Sunday church meetings and backyard barbecues. But where many of Smith's albums pack a funky wallop suitable for dance-floor workouts, THE BOSS hangs back a bit, grooving smoothly along blues progressions that allow Benson and Smith to stretch out.
Personnel: Jimmy Smith (organ); George Benson , Nathen Page (guitar); Donald Bailey (drums).
Boss Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) The Boss still one of the best Verve recordings.. With a worn-out The Boss LP from the `70s, this reissue from the Verve vaults is most welcome. George and Jimmy cooks like hell, and the late Nathan Page is also a surprise on track 4. The Boss is also unusual in the Jimmy Smith vein since there's no change in the organ registrations throughout the album - no chorus and usual 3 stops out. Verve - pls pull out more live recordings from your vaults like Live in Hamburg and Live at Village Gate (MGM). Submitted by HammondFreak (tbi (Oslo, Norway) Was This Review Helpful? Jimmy Smith & George Benson AAAA++++ Without a doubt, I am a fan of both Jimmy Smith and George Benson. Both musicians are in great form for this date(1968) which was recorded live in Atlanta. For those of you who think that George Benson is only a Pop star, think again. George exhibits oustanding jazz guitar playing on this date. Jimmy Smith of course is his usual fantastic self. Tunes range from blues to straight ahead jazz and both men take no prisoners. I especially enjoy the opening track titlted "Some of my best friends are the blues". This session is a rare treat for those of you who enjoy the music of Jimmy Smith and George Benson! Submitted by bechet12 (Philadelphia, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Remembering I 've discovered this album since I was 15 Years old. Today, I am 48 and I still remember how great the musicians were, specially George Benson who I believe did a great solo on "this guy's in love with you. I will surely order the CD from CD Universe. Boss
$9.89 One probably doesn't hear the name Gloria Coleman thrown around quite as often as other organists of the day. Similarly, the Impulse! label wasn't particularly known as a home for organ combos, but perhaps that's what makes this title the underappreciated gem that it is. Soul Sisters, in retrospect, would have probably made more sense as a Blue Note release, as it has much more in common with sessions like Freddie Roach's Good Move or John Patton's Along Came John than much of the Impulse! catalog. There are a couple of reasons for this. First of all, though they both worked for other labels as well, guitarist Grant Green and engineer Rudy Van Gelder -- both present on this session -- are virtually ...

| | Wayne Shorter Night Dreamer CD (1964) Bonus Track; Remastered
Boss
$8.85 Shorter's Blue Note debut, NIGHT DREAMER, is a stunning statement from one of the premiere saxophonists and composers in the history of jazz. In 1964, after a long period as musical director for Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and newly joining Miles Davis' quintet, Shorter was primed to enter the field as a major solo artist. His guests include Lee Morgan (trumpet), renewing the outstanding frontline the two formed in Blakey's band, and McCoy Tyner (piano) and Elvin Jones (drums) from Coltrane's legendary quartet. The musical vision here, however, is Shorter's alone.
Shorter's distinctive compositional style begins to take shape with the opening title track, a bouncing waltz with a dusky, modal flavor and a subtle ...
| | Bobby Hutcherson Oblique CD (1967) Remastered
Boss
$8.45 Bobby Hutcherson's second quartet session, Oblique, shares both pianist Herbie Hancock and drummer Joe Chambers with his first, Happenings (bassist Albert Stinson is a newcomer). However, the approach is somewhat different this time around. For starters, there's less emphasis on Hutcherson originals; he contributes only three of the six pieces, with one from Hancock and two from the typically free-thinking Chambers. And compared to the relatively simple compositions and reflective soloing on Happenings, Oblique is often more complex in its post-bop style and more emotionally direct (despite what the title may suggest). The ...
| | Houston Person Legends Of Acid Jazz CD (1996)
Boss
$8.89 Houston Person was among the guttiest of the gutbucket saxophonists of the soul-jazz golden age -- for proof, look no further than Legends of Acid Jazz: Houston Person, which compiles two of the saxman's most popular releases, Person to Person! and Houston Express (both originally released in 1970). Express featured the "funkmaster general" of the tenor saxophone with a tight, pocket-sized ensemble (including guitarist Grant Green and drummer Idris Muhammad), while, on Person!, his supporting ensemble expanded to include trumpet players Cecil Bridgewater and Thad Jones, guitarist Billy Butler and another kindred spirit and prince of funk on his instrument, Motown bassist Gerry Jemmott.
Recorded between 1967 and 1969.
Personnel: Houston Person (tenor saxophone); Grant Green, Billy Butler (guitar); Harold Vick (flute, tenor saxophone); Babe Clark (tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone); Ernie Royal, Money ...
