Nazareth's second album of 1974 finds the group tempering the four-on-the-floor hard rock attack they developed on Loud and Proud by working a surprising and effective Southern rock edge into the songs. The end result is an album that sounds like a crossbreeding of early AC/DC and Lynyrd Skynyrd at their hardest rocking. Some of the country-tinged highlights include "Glad When You're Gone," a funny kissoff to an unwanted lover that pairs hillbilly-styled singing with wah-wah-drenched guitar riffs, and "Jet Lag," a tongue-in-cheek look at life as a touring rock & roller that is driven by some. However, the finest song in this vein is the powerful opener "Silver Dollar Forger"; this hard rocking tale of an outlaw racing home with the cops on his tail has a suprisingly elaborate arrangement and plenty of driving guitar riffs. It feels like the theme song to the great 1970s car chase movie that never was. Rampant also spawned a hit single and radio favorite with "Shanghai'd in Shanghai," a pile-driving rocker that works an effective stomping beat into its shout-along chorus. The downside of this album is that it lacks the experimental edge of Razamanaz; there is little variation in the style or musical elements from song to song. That said, Rampant is a consistently energetic and engaging collection of Southern-tinged hard rock that will please Nazareth's fanbase and may even win over fans of groups like Lynyrd Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet with its effective grasp of Southern boogie. ~ Donald A. Rampant
$10.69 This package contains the original MACHINE HEAD plus quadrophonic mixes of 2 songs on one disc, MACHINE HEAD remixed by Roger Glover in 1998, and a 28 page booklet.
A probable contender for one of hard rock's "all-time most influential albums," Deep Purple's MACHINE HEAD has all the markings of a heavy classic. It was here that the band's combination of amped-up blues, progressive instrumental prowess, screaming guitars, and thunderous rhythms was crystallized for the ages, helping to lay the foundation for hard rock and heavy metal throughout the '70s, '80s, and '90s. The lone presence of "Smoke ...

| | Deep Purple Who Do We Think We Are? CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Rampant
$9.65 After establishing itself as a hard-rock giant, thanks to endless touring and the release of such milestone records as MACHINE HEAD and IN ROCK, Deep Purple was in a state of turmoil when it went into the studio to record 1972's WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE? Despite all the infighting, the band pulled together long enough to record seven tracks that only bolstered the band's reputation.
The best-known song, "Woman From Tokyo," boasted a riff as memorable as the one that defined "Smoke on the Water" and was later admitted by Ritchie Blackmore to have been cribbed from Eric Clapton's "Cat Squirrel." Although Blackmore's always-impressive riffing stands out on such songs as "Mary Long" and "Place in Line," ...

Rampant
$12.09 Popular vocalist Eddy Howard (1914-1963) formed his own band in 1941, after making a series of records with bandleader Dick Jurgens and various small jazz groups supervised by producer John Hammond. Both elements -- the sweet swinging dance band sound of Jurgens and the genuine jazz preferred by Hammond -- are strongly present in Circle's 24-track anthology of radio transcription recordings made ...
| | Milton Nascimento Clube Da Esquina CD (1972)
Rampant
$11.29 Digitally remastered by Milton Nascimento (May 1994, Abbey Road Studios, London, England).
The great Brazilian singer Elis Regina once said, "If God were to sing, it would be with the voice of Milton." She probably meant it as a compliment to God. Of all the amazing sounds to come out of Brazil, few are as distinctive or as moving as the voice of Milton Nascimento.
CLUBE DA ESQUINA ("Corner Club") is a 1972 collaboration with friend and fellow musician Lo Borges. Joined by a talented group of musicians whom the two had grown up with in the Minas Gerais district of Brazil, Nascimento and Borges cover a startlingly broad range of styles and moods, from folk-influenced tunes of love and lament to rock-tinged songs that veil protest under a gauze of poetry. While the music draws heavily on the roots of Brazilian music, it also takes in elements of pop and rock that only enhance its impact. The influence of the Beatles is unmistakable, but never overbearing. And the use of unusual ...

Looking at the state of metal from the standpoint of the early 21st century, it's hard to believe that the Long Island hardcore metal act Vision of Disorder didn't connect with a larger audience. Perhaps it was because they were together during a period when MTV/radio largely shunned hard rock/metal -- in the pre-Headbanger's Ball ...
