As modern heavy metal acts go, Mare is indeed a rare breed. From the doom-drone-sludge of Sunn 0))) to the post-screamo of Envy to the tongue-in-cheek instru-metal of the Fucking Champs, the genre itself is all over the place. But as a band, Mare are all over the place within their own realm of sound. "Anisette," the opening track on their debut EP, resembles the metal-gone-post-rock of Pelican or Isis, all complex timing and mixed up tempos, but then the vocals arise from the depths, these being the death rock, Cookie Monster growls. The dark anger of that track resolves in the elegiac lightness of the second track, "They Sent You," which falls not so very far from Sigur Rós territory, with its classical instrumentation and choirboy vocals, which it can't long sustain as the track breaks out some heroic downtuned riffage. "Tropics" lumbers along like the Mars Volta kids fronting early Black Sabbath as a lounge act, which abruptly explodes into "Palaces," a dirgey slo-mo screamathon of epic proportion, which devolves into a metallic take on math rock time signatures of the Don Caballero ilk, which promptly dissolves into the "hidden" track, "Sun for Miles," an a cappella arrangement of angelic harmonies resembling the Beach Boys composing "serious" music, which then erupts in a by-now obligatory black metal screamfest. All in all a complex and confusing, yet cathartic, first offering. ~ Brian Way
Mare: Tyler Semrick-Palmateer (vocals).

$15.09 (MP3 Available for Download) Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, ...
| | Isis Panopticon CD (2004)
Mare music CDs
$13.05 If the glacial dynamics of previous metal and hardcore abstractions Celestial and Oceanic didn't prove that Isis was a heavy band in every sense, then Panopticon should do the trick. The title comes from 18th century philosopher Jeremy Bentham's prison design, which was later referenced by Michael Foucault in the 20th century. The idea is that a centrally placed guard or watcher can keep track of a large number of prisoners, and it excited Bentham and concerned Foucault. Heavy stuff for a metal band, huh? Both are quoted in the liner notes, bookended by aerial industrial photos laying out society's open sprawl. It fits perfectly with ...

Mare CD music
$7.89 (MP3 Available for Download) The Church, one of Australia's finest rock bands, offers up an excellent 12-song set that features "Tristesse," "As You Will," and "Disenchanted."
Whether it was the assistance of Peter Walsh on production, a decision to bear down and see what could be done, or some further combination of that and other factors, the Church came up with its best release since The Blurred Crusade with the powerful Heyday. Not changing anything in the basic Church sound but presenting ...

On REMAIN IN LIGHT, the Heads fused their twitchy, intellectual geek-rock sensibilities with an organic, spiritual funkiness that catapulted them into a new artistic realm, virtually unfettered by the shackles of their "new wave" past. SPEAKING IN TONGUES picks up where that album left off, expanding on the band's newfound funk aesthetic and even upping the danceability quotient a notch or two. The Heads let their hair down a bit more here than on REMAIN ...

| | Maple Bridge First Crossing CD (2007)
Mare album
$9.35 In June of 2006, a pairing of musical minds began collaboration on a song. Dave Schweizer and Mark Lopez met at a songwriters networking group in Pasadena.A short time later Dave sent Mark a few lyrics he had no music for and within a week, Mark developed the basic structure for what would become “Ticket To Your Town”.Two recording sessions later, the arrangement was finalized. The results made both musicians realize that a continued effort would net them something far greater than what they could accomplish individually. With a streamline writing and recording approach, ideas flowed effortlessly and within eight months, the first Maple Bridge CD had been completed. The first song is the aforementioned “Ticket To your Town”. With the bass line driving the rhythm and with syncopated guitars layering an arrangement reminiscent of JJ Cale,It speaks of a guy’s effort to get to the locale of a girl he has a passion for, but the feeling isn’t exactly reciprocal. “Goodbye 21” is straightforward old country, with Dave’s lead guitar bends, and Mark’s honky-tonk piano at the break, this song is about running into old flames and yet acknowledging that you can’t go back and that life just moves on. “Tequila Tide” takes you into a Jimmy Buffet world of South Sea Islands and an endless shore. Mark sings a character that is enamored of his beautiful, flirty companion whose nature changes with her prodigious intake of alcohol. This piece contrasts Mark’s input of marimba sounds evoking the peaceful paradise, and Dave’s choppy guitars riffs and slightly sour leads to emphasize the woman’s increasingly drunken state.“This Old Car” showcases Dave’s clever lyrical metaphor of a guy trying to get back to his girl who dumped him for someone living in the “fast lane”. Mark’s melody and harmony accent this sweet and sentimental song over Dave’s driving piano and guitar.“A Drifter And A Settledown” is sung from the third person view of a friend commenting on the impending crossroads of a couple that may or may not hook up. Dave’s use of overdrive guitar layers the arrangement until the bridge, where Mark softens the sound with a string quartet, then the song builds with both strings and guitar into a powerful finish.“Pour Me A Stronger Dream” is ...
