Personnel: Paul McCandless (bass clarinet, oboe, English horn, soprano saxophone, tenor saxophone); Art Lande (piano); Peter Barshay (double bass); Alan Hall (drums). Paul McCandless is the longtime reed player in the folk-jazz group Oregon, while pianist Art Lande is still probably best-known for his recordings for the ECM label. One can be excused for thinking that their collaboration on Shapeshifter would be a bit sleepy but the opposite is true. Their playing in a quartet with bassist Peter Barshay and drummer Allen Hall displays plenty of energy and constant invention. The music is a bit free in spots but well organized and always coherent and generally melodic. McCandless, who plays five reeds, is heard mostly on soprano, and his interplay with Lande sometimes borders on the telepathic, whether it be on one of the brief introspective pieces or the swinging advanced blues "Pietroglyph." Both McCandless and Lande are heard at their best throughout Shapeshifter, a stimulating set well-worth acquiring. ~ Scott Yanow Leader and reed player Paul McCandless teams with pianist Art Lande, bassist Peter Barshay, and drummer Allen Hall on this excellent post-bop date. McCandless was a key component of the popular, long-running jazz fusion group Oregon, and the sense of openness and experimentation that characterized the best of that ensemble's work is here. As a musician (he is heard on several instruments here, most notably soprano saxophone) McCandless incorporates Indian and African motifs, elements of free jazz, and ambient colorings, yet his overall approach on SHAPESHIFTER is full of edge and vigor. The chemistry within the quartet contributes to the exciting feel of the session; and this is particularly true of the rapport between McCandless and Lande, whose exchanges crackle and scintillate throughout. SHAPESHIFTER is aptly named--stylistically it ranges all over the map, encompassing blues, impressionistic idylls, avant clatter, and sinuous, soothing light jazz. There is a little something for everyone here, putting SHAPESHIFTER alongside the best of McCandless's work. Paul Mccandless Shapeshifter Songs Shapeshifter Review

| | Ralph Towner Time Line CD (2006)
Shapeshifter
$13.19 Personnel: Ralph Towner (acoustic 12-string guitar, 12-string guitar, classical guitar). Recording information: Propstei St. Gerold, Austria (09/2005). Photographer: Paolo Soriani. It's hard to believe that it's been more than five years since Ralph Towner issued his last solo guitar album, or any album under his own name, for that matter. Anthem was issued in 2000. Time Line is a return to the stark, spacious and lyrical explorations of that set. That's not to say this is any kind of direct replica. Towner's a restless artist, he pushes his boundaries on the classical and 12-string guitars. The set contains 14 new compositions and two fine covers that provide the real reason for Towner's not-so-secret inspiration here: George Gershwin's "My Man's Gone Now," and Harold Arlen's "Come Rain or Come Shine." The muse, of course, is Bill Evans. Evans has been forever associated with the former tune since his 1961 trio performance ...

Shapeshifter
$13.29 The jazz-fusion guitarist Norman Brown gained steadily increasing respect and sales throughout the 1990s with a series of accomplished albums that set him firmly in latter-day George Benson smooth jazz territory. This mostly instrumental set features Brown performing a palatable collection of easy-on-the-ear melodies, accompanied by an illustrious roster of sidemen, including the saxophonist Kirk Whalum and the trumpeter Rick Braun, and also boasts a typically classy Brian McKnight vocal on the tastefully seductive title track. Norman Brown won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album for Just Chillin', his fifth CD, but he says that his fans tell him their favorite recording of his was After the Storm, his second collection from 1994, and critics tend to agree. On Stay with Me, his seventh album and first for Peak Records ...
