In interviews, Bang 'Em made it sound like his debut with fellow Queens rapper Domination would be bigger than anything the G-Unit family ever unleashed. His short-lived association with 50 Cent's crew and the venomous beef that followed his exit (or firing, depends on whom you ask) made him someone to talk about, but luckily Bang 'Em doesn't dwell on it on his debut with the talented Domination, an equal player here despite Bang 'Em's runaway fame. God Giveth, God Taketh Away is a solid debut with plenty of newcomer enthusiasm and the lack of polish that can come with it. The usual bravado and confrontation is tempered with well-written, introspective numbers like the excellent "Misery" and kicking bangers like the out-of-control "Rowdy." Too often the album's rickety production undermines the intense posturing of the duo, and their looseness in the presence of Kurupt on "Stay Down" suggests a less anxious sophomore release will be more rewarding (which will take a while to see, since Bang 'Em remains in prison on a weapons violation as the album was released). Consider it if you're a fan of underground, East Coast thug music, but G-Unit soldiers will be put off by the lack of hooks and polish. ~ David Jeffries
Personnel: Domination, Tone, Kurupt, Bang 'Em, Young Dice, D.V. (rap vocals).

God Giveth, God Taketh Away
$13.15 Enter the Jacka. The death of 2Pac in the mid 90's ripped the heart out of West Coast Hip Hop. At the same time a young street poet named the Jacka was honing his skills in the Bay Area Rap game. Always open minded, he was influenced by b-boys and thugs, pimps and Imams. The Jacka has since developed into an established, well-rounded, well-versed emcee in the right place to bring the West Coast some serious attention. The Jacka's music is a reflection of his life. He witnessed the birth of the dope game and the drug war that followed, as the battle was waged in his community, on his block, and in his house. Memories of departed loved ones haunt his mind and soul. His release is to share his experiences through his music. Reality hurts. Rap is the Jacka's medicine. That and some purple. Jacka's success proves his mettle as an emcee. He has been featured on over 50 albums over the past six years. His contributions to the Mob Figaz self-entitled album resulted in over 100,000 units sold. His tour with Yukmouth (of the Luniz), C-Bo, the Mob Figaz, and Tech 9ne exposed him to nationwide notoriety. ...

God Giveth, God Taketh Away
$11.49 Few pop song catalogs have been as underappreciated as that of the Carpenters. Though many of their best songs ("Rainy Days and Mondays," "We've Only Just Begun") were penned by equally underrated songwriter Paul Williams, pianist Richard Carpenter got his compositional licks in too, and it was his vocalist/drummer sister Karen whose sweet but unaffected vocal style cemented these tunes' popularity and helped place them in the '70s pop canon for all time.
This collection, though essentially a functional "best of," focuses, as the title makes plain, on LOVE SONGS. Of course, it doesn't hurt that such tunes happened to be the duo's stock in trade. From the achingly evanescent "Close ...
