In an age of media-hyped band reunions, many music fans are understandably wary of comeback albums. Longtime devotees of reunited groups complain about lineup changes and yearn for the old sound, while newer and younger fans reach for the "classics" to see what they missed. Bands mounting comebacks need to work twice as hard to prove themselves. Luckily, Helmet has never been afraid of a little hard work.
After a seven-year hiatus, one of alternative metal's most influential acts returns with a new war cry in 2004's SIZE MATTERS. For this record, frontman Page Hamilton (vocals/guitar) reunites with Chris Traynor (guitar) and enlists bassist Frank Bello (Anthrax) and drummer John Tempesta (Rob Zombie, Testament) to round out the personnel. Despite the changes, SIZE MATTERS delivers the same kind of solid, minimalist riffs and tense, rhythmic propulsion that defined Helmet's major-label debut, MEANTIME. Progressive-jazz chord changes still keep the listener guessing, and Hamilton's evolution hints at a less industrial sound, with vocals and atmospheric guitars placed at the forefront of the mix. Helmet's distinctive style remains as significant as it was almost 15 years prior, and SIZE MATTERS is an album to be appreciated by Helmet lifers and rookies alike.

After a long break, helmet returns (sort of). Good CD overall, but could have been be a bit heavier. Hopefully they'll be back for a while and will add a bit more of that old sound many of us enjoy.

If you have been a longtime fan of Helmet like myself you might be wondering how the seven year layoff may have affected this bands sound. Worry not--"Size Matters" is in fine form in song quality and aggression.The patented wall of guitars are still present and this album totally rocks hard.I have all of Helmets work and this to me is the bands strongest and most cohesive album yet.No weak tracks whatsoever!!!I was very suprised listening to the disc at Page Hamiltons vocal style this time around as he actually sings vocal melodies and harmonies. If you are familiar with Helmets previous work this may seem strange or scary but fear not....when I say melodic and harmonies I'm not talking Poison or Creed,etc...it works.Of note,I've let three different friends borrow this to check it out and they all loved it...Finally, if you already like Helmet I don't think you'll be disappointed and if you haven't checked this awsome band out you'll be glad you did!

Album rocks. Simple enough. Crashing Foreign Cars is ridiculous. The guy who said this is nu-metal is on drugs or something....this sounds nothing like that. Last I checked, there's no rapping here fool. Can't wait for Monochrome to come out.

This album proves that Page Hamilton does not get stuck in a rut. The songs still have Helmet's driving sound but they also have some new flavors. Filled with awesome guitar solos, great harmonies, and exuding with musical talent, "Size Matters" is an overall praise-worthy album. The songs sound excellent live, too!
