Long Island natives Unearthly Trance seemed to be trying almost too hard on their unnaturally corrosive 2003 debut full-length, Season of Séance, Science of Silence -- an album so determined to push the known boundaries of crusty, deathly doom to unexplored depths of sonic extremity, that attention to songcraft proper occasionally had to take a back seat to the sheer terror they were trying to convey. So much so that some listeners may find their next outing, In the Red, positively accessible by comparison, thanks to the noticeably shorter, more manageable lengths, and discernibly rock-based riffs forged for initial offerings like "Penta(grams)" and the surprisingly fast-paced "It Is the Never and Forever That You Fear." But it doesn't take long for the trio to leap back into the abyss, using additional tracks "Possession in Poverty" and "Turning Piss Into Gold" to delve into the hell of drug addiction, and prove that frontman Ryan Lipynsky can write about subjects other than the occult. To wit, molten feedback cacophonies like the title track and the cavernous "Deathothic" find him wandering through the bowels of a volcano and imagining cyclopean worlds of Lovecraftian design, respectively. All told, this makes for an album-length, near-death experience of slightly less blackened, oppressive and grotesque proportions than Unearthly Trance's previous work; but the band's increased maturity and newfound party tricks arguably makes it all the more interesting. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

Mojo (Publisher) (p.99) - 3 stars out of 5 - "IN THE RED is one of the grisliest slabs of blackened doom metal this side of Electric Wizard, Khanate or Melvins." Unearthly Trance In The Red Songs In The Red Review

Purchase In The Red CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Paul Butterfield Blues Band CD (1965)
In The Red album
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica ...
| | Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland CD (1968)
In The Red CD music
$9.79 Principally recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York in April and May 1968.
On ELECTRIC LADYLAND Jimi Hendrix stretched and experimented in the studio, going beyond the power-trio format on what would be his last studio album with the Experience. ELECTRIC LADYLAND was revolutionary in its scope and execution. Using New York City's Record Plant as a gateway to free expression, Hendrix traversed an abstract landscape containing compositions as weird and wonderful as "...And The Gods Made Love" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)."
Simultaneously looking forwards and backwards, Hendrix mixed in a song reminiscent of his time on the chitlin' circuit (Earl King's "Come On [Part 1]"), a Bob Dylan favorite ("All Along The Watchtower"), and one of his snappiest singles ("Crosstown Traffic"). Although Hendrix produced and wrote most of this masterpiece, others weighed in with their own contributions. Noel Redding penned "Little Miss Strange," and other guests such as Al Kooper and Buddy Miles showed up to play. Traffic's Steve Winwood and Jack Casady of ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
In The Red music CDs
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
In The Red songs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, unreconstructed Southern rockers of the boogie-and-beer variety will ...
| | Antony I Am A Bird Now CD (2005)
In The Red album
$12.49 Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy Scott (another Reed supporter) and Aaron Neville. The stately, graceful, largely piano-driven songs on I AM A BIRD NOW are full of honest, uncluttered emotion, but never go over the top. The communication is direct and immediate, as wisps of melancholy settle around the listener. ...

In The Red CD music
$20.39 While there's certainly a proud tradition of British Metal, much of it lies in the past. Judas Priest and Iron Maiden may have been the vanguard of the once-thriving Brit metal institution, but you rarely hear much about contemporary thrash coming from across the pond, especially the kind of athletic, blistering metalcore played by Sheffield's Bring Me the Horizon. Mixing guttural screams with death-metal growls, the vocals ride a careening wave of classic speed-metal guitar ...
