(1 Customer Review)
The RH Factor: Roy Hargrove (vocals, trumpet, flugelhorn, keyboards, bass instrument, percussion, background vocals); Renee Neufville (vocals); Keith Anderson (saxophone); James Poyser, Bernard Wright, Bobby Sparks (keyboards); Pino Palladino, Reggie Washington (bass instrument); JT , Willie Jones (drums). Additional personnel: Rhian Ayanna (background vocals). Trumpeter Roy Hargrove drops funky on this six-track, 45-minute "EP." Teamed with a smorgasbord of musicians track-to-track, Hargrove throws down with everyone from bassist Pino Palladino to saxophonist Karl Denson to a slew of keyboard players including Bobby Sparks as well as a handful of vocalists -- Hargrove gets into the vocal act as well. While this reads like a sure-fire recipe for disaster, it's nothing like that actually. This is deep groove jazz-funk and it's played in the pocket, fat and greasy. Recommended cuts include "Rich Man's Welfare," and the awesome, ten-minute, "Universe (Bigga Than You Know It Is Mix)." ~ Thom Jurek Though it's billed as an EP, STRENGTH is 45 minutes long, and certainly has enough content to qualify for full-length status. RH Factor is jazz trumpeter Roy Hargrove's electric jazz-funk alter-ego; under this moniker, the erstwhile straight-ahead jazzman neatly solves the problem that's been plaguing musicians since the early 1970s--how do you mix jazz with funk and electric instruments without sounding like Miles Davis? While the roiling R&B grooves and percolating keyboard riffs that frame Hargrove's terse trumpet lines are somewhat in the lineage of ON THE CORNER, JACK JOHNSON, et al, there's a distinctly contemporary feel to STRENGTH. There's as much Earth, Wind & Fire and hip-hop showing in Hargrove's roots here as Miles; much of this disc wouldn't sound out of place in the middle of a particularly progressive dance-club mix. Nevertheless, Hargrove generates enough fire and genuine melodic development to underscore the fact that he's a master improviser first and foremost. $6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody ...

Personnel includes: Bobby Short (vocals, piano); Phil Moore (conductor); Ismael Uqarte (bass); Sonny Rivera (drums). Recorded at Capitol Studios, New York, New York in July 1957. Originally released on Atlantic (1574). Includes liner notes by Bobby Short. Personnel: Bobby Short (vocals, piano); Sonny Rivera (drums). Audio Remasterer: Rosalind Ilett. Liner Note Author: Bobby Short. Recording information: Capitol Studios, New York, NY (07/12/1957-07/24/1957). In the summer of 1957, when Bobby Short went into the studio to record his fourth 12" LP for Atlantic Records, the label hired an orchestra for one of the dates, and Short cut a total of 27 songs for what was supposed to be a two-record set. Atlantic seems to have reconsidered the economics of such a package, however, and the resulting album, Sing Me a Swing Song, was a conventional single disc, with the rest of the tracks going into the vault. It was only much later that Short persuaded Atlantic to go public with the remaining material on this album, Nobody Else but Me. But from a musical standpoint, it didn't make that much difference whether this album appeared in the late '50s or the early '70s. Great changes may have taken place in the world of popular music in general, but not in the classy nightclubs of Manhattan. Beginning with two songs on which he's joined by his rhythm section of Ismael Ugarte on bass ...
