Personnel: David Murray (saxophone), Dave Burrell (piano), Wilber Morris (bass), Victor Lewis (drums). Personnel: David Murray (bass clarinet, tenor saxophone); Dave Burrell (piano); Victor Lewis (drums). Liner Note Author: Marty Cook. Recording information: Trixi Studio, Munich, Germany (09/25/1988). Photographer: Ssirus Pakzad. Lucky Four is a smooth and luscious quartet date with Murray in the company of longtime associate Dave Burrell, bassist Wilber Morris, and drummer Victor Lewis. With the exception of a short piece by his manager Kunle Mwanga, all of the pieces are by either Burrell or Morris, and most of them are gems. Sinuous and bluesy, with a rich interplay of rhythms and melodies, they are the ideal platform for a soloist like Murray: grounded enough to keep him from straying too far but deep enough for him to find plenty of goodies to unearth. Morris' "Chazz," dedicated to Charles Mingus, recalls the master with accuracy and affection, giving Murray a shot to wield his bass clarinet in homage to Dolphy and allowing the composer his own heartfelt homage. The highlight of the session is Burrell's wonderful composition, "Abel's Blissed Out Blues," a piece Murray would record often and an extremely infectious number. It begins with a moody, slow section and launches into an exuberant two-step that catapults Murray skyward with the rhythm section rocking away beneath. Two songs are given the repeat treatment, and they're enjoyable enough to make the exercise worthwhile. The late '80s produced some of Murray's strongest work in the quartet format, and Lucky Four fits in quite comfortably. | | Bob Dylan Radio Radio: Theme Time Radio Hour, Volume One CDs (2009) Box Set
Lucky Four
$36.69 The first episode of Bob Dylan's THEME TIME RADIO HOUR aired on May 3, 2006 and featured Dylan as a DJ spinning an eclectic mix of folk, blues, R&B, soul, rock & roll, bebop, country, and even rap drawn from his personal record collection, and aside from revealing the broad sweep of Dylan's musical interests, the shows, each of which were woven around a single theme, were a fascinating tour through roots and urban music in all of its forms. This four-disc set contains 112 tracks that Dylan played on his show, and it exhibits a delightful diversity, with sides ranging from the Spaniels' doo wop version of "Stormy Weather" to the stately jazz swing of Duke Ellington's "Take the 'A' Train," with stops along the way for gems like the Stanley Brothers' wonderfully ragged take on "Little Maggie," the Louvin Brothers' "Knoxville Girl," and Frankie Lymon's classic pop hit "Why Do Fools Fall in Love," and so much more. It works as a massive and diverse anthology of music all on its own, but since it also affords a glimpse at Dylan's listening interests, it reverberates and works as a kind of primer for his own work, as well. $15.79 The Kinks: Dave Davies, John Beecham, John Gosling, Ray Davies , John Dalton , Mick Avory, Alan Holmes, Laurie Brown. Personnel: P. Travis, K. Kocjan, A. Girton, S. Brown (vocals); Chris Timothy (spoken vocals). Arranger: Ray Davies . Ray Davies released the "song" songs from Preservation -- the character sketches, the wry observations, the lovely ballads -- on the first record (or "Act") of the musical drama, leaving the narrative for Preservation, Act 2, a double album released six months after its companion. Simply put, the record is a mess, an impenetrable jumble of story, theater, instrumentals, "announcements," unfinished ideas, guest singers, and, on occasion, a song or two. There may have been a workable theatrical production hidden somewhere in Preservation, but it was utterly lost on record (reportedly it was better live), due in no small part to how it was unevenly divided, a practice that revealed Davies' lack of realized songs for the project, plus his unfinished story. It was later revealed that Ray was at the end of his rope during the making of Preservation -- he would have a breakdown during ...
