A fine post-bop pianist based in the tradition, but with ears open to Cecil Taylor, Uli Lenz (who was born in Germany) is heard in excellent form on this live trio date with bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Joe Chambers. Lenz digs into three standards ("Freedom Jazz Dance," "My Foolish Heart," and "Sophisticated Lady") and four challenging originals of his own. A lyrical player with his own sound, Lenz has the ability to play both melodically and quite free at the same time. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Uli Lenz (piano); Cecil McBee (upright bass); Joe Chambers (drums).

Live At Sweet Basil album
$14.80 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known ...

| | Bump CD (2006)
Live At Sweet Basil album
$9.85 BUMP is the child brain of three talented musicians based just outside of Chicago, Il. Joe Rocha (Bass/Vocals), Jay Rocha (Drums), and Dave Benziger (Guitar, Vocals). They have been playing as side musicians for other artists in the Chicago area for over 20 years and have recently had the time and opportunity to record their own debut, self-titled album. The opportunity came about when a guitar hero of Dave’s, Carl Verheyen (guitarist for the band Supertramp and A-List Hollywood television and movie session guitarist) suggested that the band come out to L.A. to record an album with him as producer. You see, as much as the guys like making their own music and performing live as BUMP, their main goal is to be out on the road as side musicians for artists on the pro circuit. With help from their friends who are already on the pro circuit playing for today’s biggest artists, they are well on their way to achieving that goal. And with the release of “BUMP”, they have a major catalyst in getting there even faster! The CD itself is a solid mix of Rock, Hard Rock, and Pop Rock, with an explosive metal instrumental track (“Super Karate Monkey Death Car”) and a blues-y, laid back instrumental (“Everything Will Be Fine”). There’s even a punk cover of the Tom Jones classic, “It’s Not Unusual.” You may even notice something that you may have never seen (well, heard) on a CD before – outtakes tracks. They’re snippets of funny goof-ups, goof-offs, and nonsense that ...

Live At Sweet Basil CD music
$20.25 ORIGINAL RELEASE - VERY LIMITED QUANTITIES!!SuperGiant - DEMO EPReview by Tim Emswiler (StonerRock.com)Self-released/Self-producedAvailable nowNow, I’ve never been to Albuquerque, New Mexico. In fact, I haven’t even come close, but when I found out that SuperGiant hails from those parts, my mind immediately assumed that I would hear some fat, fuzzy, smoke-wreathed chords, some peyotian lyrics, and that kinda head-down determination to rock blended with just enough space to keep the mental pores open and provide a break from the hair-throwing. This is because I am psychic. And this is exactly what I got. Now, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t hear a touch of the Kyussian here, but I’d be hard-pressed to think of a band that embodies what I think of as “stoner rock” who avoids this favorite of all name drops. And SuperGiant does indeed embody that, but there is a vibe here that makes this unique, and (more importantly) rewards repeated listens. A big part of that vibe comes courtesy of Joel Rogers’ vocals, which are neither ...

Live At Sweet Basil album
$11.39 As a young boy growing up in South Philly I had a vivid imagination. From the time that I learned to read, books have provided me with countless hours of pleasure. The characters and the stories kept my imagination working overtime. I love to listen to a good story. And I’ve always admired colorful characters. Be they real or fictitious. My father used to be a member of a private social club just up the street from his grocery store. He was also a bartender there at the “Societi di Cosenza.” He would take me there when I was just a little kid. 5 years old. I refused to go home to bed until he let me have a glass of beer. (Just a shot glass)You see, I wanted to be like the grown up men, my father’s friends, who I stared up at in wild-eyed innocence. The ...
