Lynn Anderson kept a relatively low profile after her smash successes in the 1970s, but 2004's THE BLUEGRASS SESSIONS shows the country-pop chanteuse still capable of making ear-catching music. Much like Dolly Parton, who parlayed her mainstream country success into a well-received string of bluegrass albums in the late '90s and early 2000s, Anderson decided to make an album of roots music. Her sweet voice, with its delicate balance of croon and twang, still has all the gloss of its commercial heyday, but the folksy arrangements, foot-stomping tempos, and fiery banjo and fiddle playing take this set straight back to the mountains.
Anderson recasts some of her own Top Ten hits--"What a Man My Man Is" (which kicks off the set), the bouncy "Ride, Ride, Ride," and a smoothly chugging "That's a No-No" are brought to new life in a flurry of heartfelt picking and singing. Anderson's biggest hit, "Rose Garden," is given a double-time snare, propulsive banjo line, and some fine fiddling. Covers of the Carpenters' "Top of the World" and the Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk" may seem unlikely picks for a bluegrass album, but Anderson successfully combines roots music with a pop-savvy sensibility on these tracks. That combination is very appealing--as one listen through THE BLUEGRASS SESSIONS proves.
Initial pressings include bonus DVD.

Bluegrass Sessions songs
$12.35 There's no recording date information and the general packaging is minimalist, to say the least; but this double-disc set -- one live CD and one DVD containing the video equivalent of the same show -- delivers where it counts, in the music. The sound is such that there's very little audience ambience, but there's plenty of presence for the band and even more so for Lynn Anderson, who is in excellent form throughout. The CD is great, but the DVD is even better, not only ...

Bluegrass Sessions MP3 Album
$19.15 Something else that came along in 2001 besides the Patriot Act was the Rounder label's Deep River of Song series, in which the original '30s and '40s field recordings carried out by Alan Lomax and John A. Lomax are once again collected, complete with lavish packaging and detailed liner notes. Some of the material that previously appeared on Red River Blues 1934-1943 and a similar set entitled Red River Runs: 1934-41 Field Recordings wound up included on the Rounder volume entitled Deep River of Song: Georgia. In light of that, blues collectors may seriously wonder whether these older sets published by labels such as Flyright and Travelin' Man are worth the trouble. Many may never have to ask the question, as these labels were distributed much less widely than Rounder product and may not even show up even after a marathon exploration of the used record pile. There is life after Lomax, however. In point of fact, there are more than a few blues fans who became disgusted by this family's habit of taking credit as the authors and de facto publishers of songs that they recorded, but had absolutely nothing to do with creating. Sorry, suggesting to a bluesman that he make up a song about "Goin' to Richmond" is not an instant promotion to authorship of the song. ...

$11.79 It might have seemed like a good idea at the time. Highly tipped L.A. band with a definite goth bent and a hyper-theatrical lead singer gets signed to a major label and releases a heavily hyped debut album produced by Ian Broudie, known for his work with Echo & the Bunnymen and others. Perhaps RCA's goal was to search for the new Cure or something, but the end result wasn't promising -- indeed, it was almost disastrous. On the one hand, the elements that make Johnny Indovina and company's work so gripping are already ...
