Kidnapped by gangsters who plan to killer her once the ransom is paid, a socialite's only hope for survival is the one man she has every reason to hate and no reason to trust. The film is rated R. Kim Darby and Scott Wilson star. Miss Blandish (Kim Darby), a young well-to-do heiress suffering from the emotional strain of overprotective parents, is kidnapped by a group of money-hungry thugs and thrust into a world of slums and poverty. As the Grissom Gang holds her for ransom, Miss Blandish begins a torrid love affair with their murderous leader, Slim (Scott Wilson), throwing a wrench in the family's plans to free her. Darby gives a complex and sultry performance as the pouty riches-to-rags debutante whose attraction to Slim seems driven by a spiky mixture of love, sex, and masochism. Director Robert Aldrich, after a triad of war films (FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX, DIRTY DOZEN, TOO LATE THE HERO), offers a slight change of pace with THE GRISSOM GANG, a violent, dramatic, and darkly funny film. Grissom Gang Reviews: "...THE GRISSOM GANG is original, arresting and, at times, violently funny..."

| | Ella Fitzgerald Live At Mister Kelly's CDs (2007) Remastered
Grissom Gang review
$14.79 Ella Fitzgerald didn't lack for live recording opportunities in the late '50s, which on the surface, would make this first issue of a 1958 Chicago live club date an easy one to pass on. Verve label head Norman Granz recorded her often in the '50s with an eye to releasing live albums, which he did with her shows at Newport in 1957 and Los Angeles' Opera House in 1958 (not to mention another 1958 concert in Rome that was released 30 years later to wide acclaim). Those shows, however, differed widely from this one, which found her in front of a very small audience at Chicago's jazz Mecca Mister Kelly's (Sarah Vaughan's landmark At Mister Kelly's was recorded there four months earlier). Fitzgerald's artistry is basically a given in this situation, but much of the material recorded here was rare and obscure; "Your Red Wagon" had only been released as a single, her delightfully melodic "Across the Alley from the Alamo" never appeared elsewhere, and for a pair of Sinatra evergreens -- ...

Grissom Gang DVD
$8.69 In 1990, coaches Sean Porter and Malcolm Moore took the Kilpatrick Mustangs--a football team of hard-core juvenile offenders from California's Camp Kilpatrick juvenile detention center--through their inaugural season, in which they reached the regional championships. In 1993, an Emmy-winning documentary, GRIDIRON GANG, aired on U.S. television. In this fictionalized version of the same name, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson stars as Porter, the coach who uses sports as a means to instill self-esteem into a group or boys for whom crime is a way of life.
A former troubled youth who used football as a means to stay off of the streets, Porter, along with Malcolm Moore (Xibit) now presides over Camp Kilpatrick, where the inmates are gang members, murderers, and drug dealers. Among them are Willie Weathers (Jade York), a gang member doing time for a botched act of revenge. Showing that old rivalries hold true even away from the streets, fellow inmate and rival gang member Calvin Owens (David Thomas) won't let Willie forget that they are sworn enemies. But once Porter introduces football as an outlet, the common goal of winning unites them in ways that no one expected. Sports films are not known for harboring O-Henry-like twists at their conclusions, and GRIDIRON GANG is no exception, but director Phil Joanou (STATE OF GRACE) keeps the proceedings gritty (especially for a PG-13 rating), giving us not only the uplifting and exciting football sequences, but also a handful of heart-pounding--and somewhat graphic--scenes of gang violence, and former Yes member Trevor ...
