The king of symbolism and double entendre is back and in fine form. The territory is nothing that hasn't been covered before, but that's exactly what makes Sease so simultaneously raunchy and charming. The music and production are par for his course, but people don't purchase Sease records to hear production perfection. They want to hear the man tell it like it is. And while none of these songs reach the brilliance of such classics as "I Ate You for My Breakfast," "Candy Licker," and any of his signature tunes, there are moments where Sease comes close. Although Lee "Shot" Williams is nominally a modern blues singer, the smooth sounds of Nibble Man are mostly straight-up R&B of the '70s-style deep soul variety. The Chicago-style "Nothing But Party Blues" and "That's Really What the Blues Is All About" end the album on a suitably rootsy note, but up until then, Nibble Man lays out the slow jams one after another, with the proto-rap testimony "Ease on Down in the Bed" (also here in a cleaned-up "radio version") thrown in for variety. There are plenty of Big Bill Broonzy albums on the market, but this one is definitely a little special, as it's taken from his first trip to England, where a small but enthusiastic group of fans saw him play on tour. For most, it was their first live exposure to real American blues, certainly of the Mississippi Delta variety, and Broonzy didn't let them down -- although he did throw in a few surprises, like his take on the standard "I'm Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover" or a version of "In the Evening When the Sun Goes Down," which must have left the audiences a little stunned. However, his takes on "John Henry" and "House Rent Stomp" (both of which have two versions here, from different shows) are very much the real deal, while "Trouble in Mind" and "Midnight Special" are nothing less than superb.
