The studio swan song of Minneapolis, Minnesota's bratty daughters Babes in Toyland, 1995's NEMESISTERS sees the grunge-rock trio embracing a more metallic sound. The culmination of vocalist/guitarist Kat Bjelland's cute/crazy aesthetic, the album is at its best when offering up unapologetically hard-hitting tracks, most notably the lumbering "Sweet '69" and the brooding "Killer on the Road." Closing on a bizarre trinity of cover tunes that includes a snotty, off-key version of Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" and a semi-melodic rendition of Sister Sledge's "We Are Family," NEMESISTERS sees the Babes riding off into the sunset in typically riotous fashion, while peers such as Hole and L7 soldiered on.
The all female alternative rock act's 1995 album that's out-of-print domestically. This 2004 remastered UK reissue features 14 tracks including covers of 'All By Myself', 'Deep Song', & 'We Are Family'. Plus the bonus track 'We Are FAmily' (video). WSM.
All songs written by Babes In Toyland except "All By Myself" (Eric Carmen), "Deep Song" (George Cory/Douglas Cross) and "We Are Family" (Nile Rodgers/Bernard Edwards).
Babes In Toyland: Kat Bjelland (guitar, vocals), Maureen Herman (bass, vocals, piano), Lori Barbero (drums, vocals).
Rolling Stone (6/1/95, p.64) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...Difficult, beautiful and at times majestic, NEMESISTERS is a record of both nightmares and dreams..." Entertainment Weekly (4/28/94, p.63) - "...these Minneapolis ragecore queens have toned down their maximum-stridency shtick a tad, delivering an album that at times actually skirts power pop..." - Rating: B Q (6/95, p.115) - 3 Stars - Good - "...a harsher and groovier LP than they've made in ages....Kat Bjelland scrawls her lyrics over a low-budget mix of surf-grunge, psychobilly-drums and askew punk riffs....a step up rather than a slip up." Option (7-8/95, p.92) - "...the trio's fifth album is simply a big, loud, satisfyingly nasty chunk of rock..." Babes In Toyland Nemesisters Songs Nemesisters Review

Nemesisters album
$16.55 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Longtime friends Jerry Garcia and David Grisman spent much of the early '90s working together on acoustic recordings of folk, country and bluegrass tunes. After Garcia's death in 1995, Grisman decided to begin releasing the prodigious backlog of music the two had accumulated, with each release covering a different genre of American music. The first, SHADY GROVE, concentrates on the folk and bluegrass that was one of their first musical loves.
This music is rich in history, encompassing everything from an Appalachian folk song (the title tune) to a Civil War ballad ("The Sweet Sunny South"). Garcia's warm, weathered vocals are handily supported by his and Grisman's nimble picking (on guitar, mandolin, banjo and other stringed things), and by such Grisman regulars as bassist Jim Kerwin and fiddler/percussionist Joe Craven. Exhaustively annotated, the booklet gives a full history of each song that will be invaluable to both serious students and casual listeners.

| | L7 Slash Years CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Nemesisters CD music
$31.55 This is a compilation of favorites by the all-female grunge outfit L7, taken from their three early 1990s releases for Slash Records and including the 1991 hit "Pretend We're Dead."
L7 had the sound, style, and tough-grrrl attitude to hit it big in the aftermath of grunge's mainstream breakthrough, but unfortunately, the band was too often hampered by uneven songwriting. The Best of L7: The Slash Years collects four songs apiece from Bricks Are Heavy, Hungry for Stink, and The Beauty Process: Triple Platinum (although, as the title suggests, there's nothing from the fine Sub Pop album Smell the Magic). It's a pretty good distillation of the cream of those records, even if there are still a few tunes on Bricks Are Heavy that could have made the cut on a less mathematically selected best-of. In fact, as L7's most pop-oriented ...
| | Babes In Toyland Spanking Machine CD (1990)
Nemesisters music CDs
$10.39 Before the terms "grunge" and "riot grrl" entered the pop-culture lexicon during the early 1990s, the Minneapolis all-female trio of Babes in Toyland incorporated trademarks of both into its fierce, punk-inspired sound, which was first unveiled on '89's SPANKING MACHINE. Fronted by singer/guitarist Kat Bjelland, who often dressed like a mangled baby doll, the group was unapologetically noisy and vulgar, as the barbed opener, "Swamp Pussy," and the violent "Vomit Heart" clearly reveal.
Helmed by the revered Seattle-based producer Jack Endino, who worked on Nirvana's ...
| | Sufjan Stevens Illinois CD (2005)
Nemesisters songs
$12.19 The second entry from sui generis singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens in his absurdly ambitious project to make a record for every state in America outdistances even 2003's superb GREETINGS FROM MICHIGAN in scope and beauty. A sweeping paean to the Lincoln state, ILLINOIS weaves together history, personal confession, and detail-filled scenarios with chamber folk, expansive orchestral pop, and back-porch pastoral settings for a stunningly progressive indie gem that sound like Brian Wilson, Stereolab, and Neil Young holding hands in heaven.
Remarkably, in its intricate, gorgeously crafted surfaces, ILLINOIS lives up to its aims. In addition to its symphonic grandeur, the album also showcases Stevens's heartland folk, and some of the album's most shimmering moments are its most spare. "John Wayne Gacy, Jr.," for instance, is an absorbing narrative that features Stevens's sweet tenor couched by guitar, piano, and backing vocals. "Casimir Pulaski Day," similarly, rides a rootsy banjo and guitar groove while Stevens unfurls image-rich lyrics over a lilting melody. Witty, audacious, and moving, ILLINOIS manages to be spiritual, entertaining, and educational ...
| | Frank Zappa Imaginary Diseases CD (2007)
Nemesisters album
$14.29 This mostly instrumental live set features a variety of musical sketches for material released later in Frank Zappa's career, such as "Greggery Peccary" and "Bebop Tango." Led by a six-piece horn section, the material tends toward jazz-rock improvisation, with Zappa at one point taking musical direction from the audience. Unexpectedly dynamic and vibrant-sounding, this set is a fascinating example of the composer at his most creative and entertaining.
