Thing Itself album
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence ...

Thing Itself songs
$15.15 COLD WAR NIGHT LIFE is a release from electronica pop act Rational Youth.
The long-overdue reissue of a classic album. Initially released on an independent Montreal-based label, this album has been out of print for years, although it was one of the largest-selling independent releases in Canada. From beginning to end, this album is brilliant, with wonderful songs played with emotion on synthesizers. Danceable, melodic, futuristic (for its time), and overall, a treat.
"Close to Nature," "Saturdays in Silesia," and "Just a Sound In the Night," among others, are amazing songs, played expertly, and now on CD sounding as they were meant to be heard. Actually, there are no weak songs on the CD, and the whole package comes highly recommended. Added to the CD reissue is the inspirational "I Want To See the Light" and the dance floor classic "Coboloid Race." This album was alternative ...
| | Punjabi Lounge CD (2003) (Import) Box Set; United Kingdom
Thing Itself album
$14.89 From the Buddha Lounge people comes Punjabi Lounge, a two-disc, continuously-mixed set similarly steeped in sonic and cultural cross pollination. Panjabi MC (ft. Desi Boys) kicks things off, crossing Banghra, James Brown, and hip-hop rhythms for an irresistibly danceable track. "Maifa" is probably the strongest thing here, though Jolly Mukherjee's "Kirwani" is a lengthy blend of chattering jungle beats, traditional instrumentation, and swirling mystery. Problem is, these highlights are scattered among the usual chillout compilation grooves (Moby's "Another Woman"; "Air Giant" from Transglobal Underground) or misguided inclusions. "Prophecy," Nitin Sawhney's collaboration with Terry Callier, is an interesting track. But what's it doing here? Similarly, an interminable "after dark" mix of Echo Dek and "Futurism" offers none of the exotic -- or at least intellectually curious -- flair promised by this set's title or earlier material. Disc Two fares a bit better, with interesting material from Rhinôçérôse and ...

| | Becky Markvart Shine Down On Me CD (2008)
Thing Itself album
$15.95 I've been a musician all my life in one aspect or another but I've only been a performing musician for 4 years. When I was 4 or 5, I began playing the piano, took classical voice lessons throughout my youth and teenage years and took guitar lessons at the age of 14. The piano lessons lasted throughout middle school but playing the guitar only lasted a short while. That is, until I again decided to pick up that somewhat familiar instrument just 3 years ago in order to accompany my singing. The song-writing is fairly new as well. I wrote some songs for piano/voice when I was a teenager, but took a very long break from that while I was in college and didn't start that up again until a year and a half ago. 'Shine Down On Me' is my Debut CD and I'm very proud of it! The title track, 'Shine Down On Me' was the first song I wrote for guitar/voice so I saw it very fitting for it to be the first track on this album. The songs on this album are excerpts taken from my life and pulled from various trials and tribulations. The song, 'Road Of Discovery' is about my struggle with Multiple Sclerosis. I was diagnosed with MS in January, 1996. Like everyone else, I have my good and bad days and often ...
