| | Claudia Villela Dreamtales CD Claudia Villela Discography of CDs
Personnel: Claudia Villela (vocals); Claudia Villela; Kenny Werner (vocals, piano). Audio Mixer: Claudia Villela. Recording information: Finetune Studio, Los Angeles, CA. Photographer: Jos L. Knaepen. Claudia Villela is a superior Brazilian jazz singer. Although she sometimes sings words and standards, she also has the ability and desire to improvise pretty freely at times. On Dreamtales she meets her musical match, teaming up on a series of very spontaneous duets with pianist Kenny Werner. Villela has a haunting voice, a very wide range, and an adventurous spirit. Werner has long displayed an ability to play with a diverse array of artists and meet them on their own turf. For this set, the duo went into the studio and simply performed eight numbers, making up the music as they went along. Sometimes their improvisations stay in one chord for long stretches (as during the nearly 13-minute "Dream Tales"), and on other occasions they get funky in a Keith Jarrett vein, as on "Room 13." On three songs, Villela sings words part of the time, and "Tom's Waters" is based loosely on "The Waters of March." Most singers who improvise freely engage in sound explorations and make unusual sounds, and that is true of "Cappuccino." But Villela is not shy to create melodies, sound warm, and develop her improvisations logically while generally staying in tempo. With Werner egging her on and inspiring her, Claudia Villela is heard in superb form throughout this intriguing set. ~ Scott YanowJazzTimes (p.78) - "DREAMTALES is a wake-up call for event he most sophisticated fan of free-form composition." Dreamtales
$9.95 Personnel includes: Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Cat Anderson, Jimmy Hamilton, Johnny Hodges. Liner Note Author: Stanley Dance. By the beginning of the 1960s, Duke Ellington and his faithful collaborator, Billy Strayhorn, had been exposed to many different cultures throughout the world, influences heavily reflected in the compositions on AFRO BOSSA. Ellington had been seeking new musical pastures for some time, and his signing with Frank Sinatra's Reprise imprint provided some of the impetus for this 1962 release, one the first fruits of his and Strayhorn's labors for the new label. However, no matter how exotic the musical source material, all these compositions carry the classic Ellington stamp, from the concise piano and bass duet introduction to "Purple Gazelle," to the sumptuous brass arrangement that heralds the opening of "Pyramid." Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn combined old and new compositions to create the album Afro-Bossa, a suite consisting of a dozen pieces that was never performed in its entirety in concert, though several of the works remained in the band's repertoire. The title cut is a new work, though the "Bossa" does not refer to Brazilian ...
| | Essential Clash CD (2003) (Import) Germany; European Version
Dreamtales
$22.35 Import two CD pressing of this ace compilation from the British Punks has 41 tracks to the domestic's 40 and replaces 'Police On My Back' with '1977' and 'Broadway'. This double disc set brings together the most popular tracks by the influential London Punk act. The Essential Clash includes material from their 1977 self-titled debut right through to 1985's Cut The Crap. Features all the hits including some non-album A-sides plus great album tracks including 'White Riot', 'Clash City Rockers', 'London Calling', 'Rock The Casbah', 'Train In Vain (Stand By Me', 'Tommy Gun', 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go?' and many more. Sony/BMG.
The Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (vocals, bass); Nicky "Topper" Headon, Tory Crimes, Pete Howard (drums). Producers include: Mickey Foote, The Clash, Sandy Pearlman, Guy Stevens, Jose Unidos. Compilation producer: Bruce Dickinson. Recorded between 1977 & 1985. European edition features alternate track listing. Some would argue that if you only wanted two Clash discs in your collection, you should skip this 40-track overview and pick up The Clash and London Calling instead. No matter how transcendent those two albums are -- and they are among the very greatest popular music of the 20th century -- that overlooks the fact that the group had many, many great songs not on either album, including "Safe European Home," "Stay Free," "Bankrobber," "Rock the Casbah," "Straight to Hell," "This Is Radio Clash," and "Should I Stay or Should I Go," to begin with. That's where this 2003 compilation comes in. It fills in many of the gaps between those two records, while summarizing The Clash and London Calling well, providing a first-rate overview of the greatest punk band. It's not quite perfect, however: some great singles and B-sides fall through the cracks (notably "Gates of the West," "Jail Guitar Doors," "The Call Up," "Armagedion Time," "The Prisoner," "Protex Blue") and the Sandinista! selections feel nearly as haphazard as the album itself. Nevertheless, this does provide the best, most extensive and logical overview of the band yet assembled, and it's worthwhile not just as an introduction, but as a terrific listen. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine It's ...
