In Boston, the only thing bigger than the Dropkick Murphys' street punk and bagpipes sound is the Fenway Park's Green Monster. So it's fitting that the group united with the Red Sox for this rousing team pep song. According to lore, the team's formative years were made louder by the presence of a particularly rowdy group of supporters at every game. And when the then Boston Pilgrims won the inaugural World Series in 1903, some said it was these "Royal Rooters"' regaling of their hometown boys -- and dogging of the competition -- by singing the Broadway number "Tessie" that helped Boston win the day. The Dropkicks have reworked the song for a new generation of fans, giving it their trademark punkish punch and a whole lot of throwback bagpipe. The liners even say that somewhere in the gang vocal backups are the voices of Sox players Johnny Damon, Bronson Arroyo, and Lenny Dinardo, not to mention team VP Dr. Charles Steinberg, ex-Buffalo Tom hero Bill Janovitz, and Red Sox beat writer (and song co-writer) Jeff Horrigan. ~ Johnny Loftus

| | Dropkick Murphys Singles Collection, Vol. 1 CD (2000)
Tessie CD music
$10.69 Released in the U.S. in 2000, The Singles Collection: 1996-1997 isn't a best-of CD. Rather, the 24 songs on this good to excellent collection fall into two main categories: singles from 1996 and 1997 (which had been out of print in the U.S.) and previously unreleased live recordings. For punk lovers, the release of this disc was cause for celebration; those early singles (which came out on small ...
| | Dropkick Murphys Sing Loud, Sing Proud CD (2001)
Tessie music CDs
$10.35 The Dropkick Murphys are to punk what House of Pain was to rap. They bring an explicitly Irish sensibility to their chosen style (there are shamrocks on the album cover, and there's a bagpiper in the band, for goodness' sake) while remaining true to the conventions of the genre. Still, despite the occasional jig-like detour or pennywhistle flourish, the Murphys aren't trying to ...

| | Dropkick Murphys Singles Collection, Vol. 2 CD (2005)
Tessie album
$12.95 Singles Collection, Vol. 2 collects covers, B-sides, and "other crap" from the Dropkick Murphys, circa 1998-2004. Cock Sparrer, the Business, Shane MacGowan, AC/DC, Gang Green, Motörhead -- the covers connect the hardworking Boston unit to their heroes, but also make up a great punk (and rock, too) jukebox for any Dropkicks fan. CCR's "Fortunate Son" becomes a raucous street punk anthem with some absolutely killer rhythm guitar, there are two Cock Sparrer covers ("Working" and the Oi! classic "Watch Your Back"), and "Mob Mentality" is a collaboration with the Business that has a message for punk rock's fair-weather fans. News flash: it's not "Hey! ...
| | Dropkick Murphys Warrior's Code CD (2005) Digipak
Tessie CD music
$11.39 Like The Pogues before them, the Dropkick Murphys successfully combine traditional Irish music, (lusty, barroom choruses plus accordion and bagpipes) and punk rock (choppy guitar riffs, speedy drumming) into the kind of Celt-punk that's at the heart of their fifth album, THE WARRIOR'S CODE. Amid the folkie ...
| | Doug Haning Live At Jazz De Opus CD (2004)
Tessie music CDs
$14.69 From classically trained but forward-thinking bassist Jonas Tauber comes this album of free jazz recorded live at the Jazz de Opus club in Portland. Accompanying him are drummer William Thomas and pianist Doug Haning. Here, the trio performs a good deal of spontaneous improvisation, delving deeply into the free jazz ideals on the fly. The only thing tying the trio down is a mysterious clinging to a centering around prime numbers as the basis for the works. Beyond this, they move rapidly and seemingly randomly throughout the scales, roving madly but beautifully at the same time. With such a de-emphasis placed on the composition aspect, what stands out for the listener is a good deal of virtuosity on the parts of all three musicians. Thomas can move easily between full-scale attacks on the drumset and quieter bits of accompaniment, but seems equally at home working his way through a quick solo here and there. Haning comes across with some amazing arpeggios and bop-inspired piano lines, but always manages to twist the end result into something unexpected before he's done. His speed is the real key, though. Tauber is perhaps the most understated of the three, as he often stays behind the louder instruments. Coming up for ...
| | Violent Femmes Viva Wisconsin CD (1999) Bonus Track; Remastered
Tessie songs
$10.49 Recorded live before an adoring and extremely vocal crowd (guess where), VIVA WISCONSIN is the Violent Femmes' return to basics album. With "no overdubbing, no electronics, no crap," the Femmes tear into their impressive back catalogue of tracks with a fervor that has been somewhat subdued on more than one of the more recent studio albums. The performances here go a long way to suggesting that the best way to hear these songs is live. Nearly every track is at least as good as its studio counterpart, but there are some standouts.
"Life Is an Adventure," from ROCK!!!, was always a nice song, but here is looser and it seems even more heartfelt. Though "American Music" is a song that is good enough to withstand even the most uninspired performance, the version here truly shines, far outstripping the album version that appeared on WHY DO BIRDS SING? To give you an idea of how good these versions are, even an elongated drum solo on "Black Girls" somehow manages to sound as though it ought to have been in the original version (from HALLOWED GROUND). And how can you fault an album that ends after more than 72 minutes with "Kiss Off"?
Few bands have captured the angst, sexual frustration, and repressed rage of the '80s and '90s better than the Violent Femmes. Without falling prey to death, breakups, and commercial overexposure, the Femmes have maintained their simmering intensity with an ever-growing loyal fan base of former punks, Generation Xers, and their younger brothers and sisters. The Wisconsin trio captures nearly two decades of post-punk smarminess with Viva Wisconsin, a live retrospective recorded during a one-week tour of their home state in October 1998 that boasts a depth of song choices and performances. Whether playing their best-known hits ...
