The popular Belgian group's 2004 release; includes eight bonus tracks. 2004, Japanese import.
Aside from mono-named lead singer Antoine's occasional accent, one would not guess that the sprightly pop band Girls in Hawaii is Belgian. Musically, the group inhabits what's best described as indie-land, a place where all the guitars are jangly, the vocals are thin but appealingly low-key, organ and electric piano underlie the songs, the drums are regularly supplanted by tambourines and shakers, and the bass is all but inaudible. However, although From Here to There is strictly standard-issue indie pop, it's not without its charms. The songs don't stint on the melody, and a few have choruses that are catchy enough to make up for the largely forgettable lyrics, most notably "Time to Forgive the Winter," which also boasts the album's biggest guitar hooks. Some more personality would go a long way, but Girls in Hawaii manage to be inoffensive in their pleasant mediocrity. ~ Stewart Mason

From Here To There
$8.55 Audiovent may boast bloodlines to Incubus (singer Jason is the brother of the latter's frontman Brandon Boyd, while guitarist Ben's older sib is Incubus fretman Mike Einziger), but a complex and melodic approach towards music are the only similarities between the two bands. Throughout their impressive debut DIRTY SEXY KNIGHTS IN PARIS, Audiovent avoids merely cranking up the distortion and instead keeps a steady hand on producing well-crafted hard rock songs. Between drawing from early-'90s grunge influences and working with Goo Goo Dolls producer Gavin McKillop, this California quartet does a fine job of appropriating the loud-soft-loud method of composition; see the sitar-tinged "Rain" and the hard-hitting "Beautiful Addiction," with its subtle, dream-pop guitar.

| | Fleetwood Mac Jumping At Shadows: The Blues Years CDs (2002) Remastered
From Here To There
$15.09 This British two-disc collection offers a rather unique look at the Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac rather than just focusing on the band's output from 1967, immediately after leaving John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, to 1970 when Green left. The set is chock-full of fine studio material that documents the evolution of the band from a power trio to its Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan incarnations. And while it's true that other collections have documented the band from this period very well, none of them has dug quite as deep into the live archives or revealed the subsequent Peter Green side projects of the time. Here are 36 tracks that offer stunning live renditions of Green's "Black Magic Woman," "Oh Well," the second part of the "Madge Sessions," and Spencer's "Stranger Blues," as well as an absolutely searing version of Kirwan's "Comin' Your Way." Given the budget price of this completely remastered set, these alone would have been worth the price, but in a sense it's only the beginning. There are numerous tracks of Green with musical running-mate Duster Bennett from the pre-Fleetwood Mac years, including a truly haunted version of the title track. Add to this four tracks of Green's work with Bob Brunning's Sunflower Blues Band, and you have an evocative and intense portrait of a band struggling to come to grips with a reluctant genius as a frontman, and the era. What is most revealing is Green's focus on execution and mood. The music has a way of getting past him, not technically, but emotionally, on the live material -- the title cut, "Rattlesnake Shake," "Lazy Poker Blues" -- as well as on the instrumentals. Check the versions of Kirwan's "World in Harmony," and the extremities in this version of "Green Manalishi," for evidence. Neil Slaven assembled this comp. He also wrote its confounding and labyrinthine liner notes, which are full of information but light on continuity or style. Slaven's method of creating a musical portrait, ...

| | Dwight Yoakam Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.: Expanded CDs (1986) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Digipak
From Here To There
$10.45 GUITARS, CADILLACS, ETC., ETC. is an expanded version of an EP of the same title released on Oak Records in 1984.
Just as Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson had done a decade-plus earlier, Dwight Yoakam arrived out of left field in the mid '80s with a fresh, honest sound that breathed fresh air into what had become a bland, commercialized country music scene. The later-for-the-b.s. New Traditionalist movement had already gotten under way via such artists as Rosanne Cash and John Anderson, but Yoakam hammered the message home in a major way, appealing to the pop/rock audience with his swaggering, bad-boy image and visceral approach.
GUITARS, CADILLACS, ETC., ETC. set the template Yoakam would follow for much of his career. The album is heavily influenced by the mid-'60s Bakersfield sound of Merle Haggard and (especially) ...
