Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. GAIA ONBASHIRA pays tribute to Mother Earth and to Onbashira Matsuri, a festival celebrating the rebuilding of one of Japan's oldest structures, the Suwa Grand Shrine in Nagano. Kitaro, in other words, once again takes on two of his favorite themes: the importance of nature in our lives, and the need to maintain a spiritual connection to past traditions in this world of ever-increasing complexity and chaos. The album opens with bird imitations by Kitaro and guests (calling themselves "human birds"); the listener is then taken on a winding journey through a variety of sonic landscapes.
Stops along the way include the meditative "Tanne," evoking the image of mist-covered mountains from old Japanese paintings; the lushly orchestrated "Misty," reminiscent of Kitaro's award-winning score for Oliver Stone's HEAVEN & EARTH; and the droning, mildly Indian-influenced "Gaia," recalling his 1994 album, MANDALA. His textures range from the gentle and ethereal, bringing to mind his early treks along THE SILK ROAD, to the strident and pulsating, reminding us of his roots in progressive rock. He employs a rich array of instruments, including the Japanese biwa, the Indian tabla and tamboura, and the David Gilmour-inspired guitar work of Angus Clark.

Another in Dischord's series of value for money releases, this CD puts together the contents of both releases, along with three extra goodies for a full overview of the band's first phase of existence. One, an early version of "Walk the Line," was the group's recording debut, surfacing on the Alive and Kicking compilation. Compared to the later take, here the band is in full garage punk mode, sounding at points more appropriate for a Voxx label compilation. The other two songs, "Phobias" and "The Spy," were, at the time, unreleased demos. The first is a fairly straightforward D.C. punk number of its day (1984), in this case providing no particular surprises outside of proof of the individual musical abilities of its members, especially Haggerty. "The Spy" is good enough fun, though, a bit of a '60s surf/James Bond instrumental played with the right amount of rough humor.
