| | Roots Tipping Point CD Roots Discography of CDs
Since their inception, Philadelphia's Roots could always be counted on to expand the edges of hip-hop. PHRENOLOGY marked the height of the troupe's experimentation with punk breaks, long jazz loops, and raps ranging from the hardcore to the whimsical. For that album's follow-up, THE TIPPING POINT, the outfit smoothes off some of the edges for a more conventional rap release, but as it's a Roots record, the result is still resoundingly innovative.
When the theme from the TV show KNIGHT RIDER is inserted into "Don't Say Nuthin'," what ensues is a sinister sonic landscape. When the Roots throw in a previously mined sample, as with Al Hirt's "Harlem Hendo" on "Stay Cool," they twist it around and break it down in a manner no other artist would even imagine. Meanwhile, Black Thought, that MC of immeasurable coolness, flies fancifully over the beats and grooves with the greatest of ease, flexing his muscle on "Web" and laying back on "I Don't Care." THE TIPPING POINT is a simple outing by Roots standards, but still a refreshing and remarkable album.
UK pressing of the alternative rap act's 2004 album includes one bonus track 'Melting Pot'. Universal.
U.K. edition contains the bonus track "Melting Pot."Rolling Stone (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[With] buttery pop choruses, hard-as-hell hookless spitting, jittery programmed beats...and it's got a bunch of impressive ideas." Spin (pp.101-2) - "THE TIPPING POINT is a different kind of change-up: a straight-ahead rap album with tracks culled from a variety of mostly unknown producers....The last tracks is a testament to the group's golden A&R touch." - Grade: B Entertainment Weekly (p.76) - "[A]n eclectic and often breezy reimagining of hip-hop's energetic essence." - Grade: B+ Q (p.113) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[With] structure, innocence and a polished pop sensibility, albeit of a subtle, measured kind....It feels like a whole lot of fun." Vibe (p.140) - 4 out of 5 - "[O]pting for politically charged rhymes and melodic, accessible beats, Black Thought, ?uestlove, and company overflow with potential singles." Mojo (Publisher) (p.92) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[I]t's on the swarming, free-form 'Outro' that The Roots sound most alive....[The] tension makes THE TIPPING POINT's finest moments so electrifying." | | Melanie Fiona Bridge CD (2009)
Tipping Point CD music
$8.79 Melanie Fiona's debut single, "Give It to Me Right," was a perfect 2009 pop-R&B recording. The single coupled a timeless classic (the Zombies' "Time of the Season") with roof-raising vocals and infectious pop hooks that stuck like peanut butter. Fiona's single was perfect, albeit a touch formulaic. Because of this, it's no surprise that a large chunk of her debut album, THE BRIDGE, ...
| | 50 Cent Before I Self-Destruct CDs (2007) With DVD
Tipping Point music CDs
$11.19 Released without the usual flurry of hype, Before I Self Destruct fulfills 50 Cent's contractual obligation to the Interscope label. It also doubles as a throwback album, returning the rapper to the hunger and hatred of his early mixtapes while skillfully recasting him as a wannabe upstart. That is, for the most part. The four radio-friendly bedroom numbers that conclude the album are out of place but fairly good to dime-piece beautiful, with the best being the Ne-Yo showcase "Baby by Me" ("Have a baby by me, baby/Be a millionaire"). As pleasing as these final numbers are, if you leave the room after the macho bruiser "I Got Swag" ("I'm infinitely special/Girl the Lord is gonna bless you/If you do what I tell you to do"), you'll return to a confusingly different album, one that's as glamorous but less vital. The monstrous run of tracks that leads up to this flash and polish can be summed up by 50's "This ain't Tha Carter/It's Sparta!," a witty, deceptive, and brutish line barked over a prime Dr. Dre beat during the great "Death to My Enemies." On the cut, the producer sounds like he's been digging on RZA, but the tension ...

This is an enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
The first double-CD of original material by a rap artist, ALL EYEZ ON ME marks 2Pac's return from incarceration to the recording grind. And though Tupac Shakur may have spent the better part of 1995 locked up and battling the system, the album makes it obvious that, rather than degenerating his artistic abilities, the struggles have only elevated his skills. Now, with the backing of West Coast hip-hop's first family, Death Row Records, 2Pac gathers together many of the rap ruling class to celebrate his comeback and give the finger ...

| | Left Field Extra Innings CD (2001)
Tipping Point album
$15.19 Left Field's musical content is difficult to characterize. Their non-original repertory reflects a broad sweep of musical interests, including (but not limited to), American traditional music, gospel, jazz, and contemporary pop. Their original songs make up roughly two thirds of their concert material and cut a wide swath across a great variety of musical forms and subject matter -- from social commentary ("Hunter-Gatherer"), to historical subjects ("Father Abraham"), to political satire ("My Favorite Sons"), to songs that offer keen insight into the troubled waters of interpersonal relationships ("Let's Get Old and Cranky"), as well as the psychological plight of the aging hippie ("Billions of Brain Cells Ago"). Much of their material features 3 and 4 part vocal harmony , accompanied by keyboard, guitar and other instruments of indeterminate pitch. Left Field is Bill Neely, Liz Emmert, Deborah Griffin Bly, and Bill Bly.Left Field has contributed several original tracks to the monthly compilation of contemporary songwriters, The Fast Folk Musical Magazine, edited by Jack Hardy. This series was recently digitized and archived in the Folkways collection at the Smithsonian Institution, ...

Tipping Point songs
$15.89 The very aptly titled A Summer's Night is a lost slice of turn-of-the-'70s Quebec psychedelia. After the October Crisis (October 1970), French Canadian music will take a resolutely national turn, leading to the rise of French-singing groups like Harmonium and Beau Dommage in 1973-1974 (prog rock group Morse Code will even switch from English to French around that time). However, A Summer's Night was recorded a little prior to the terrorist events that will precipitate the Quebec sovereignty movement. As a result, the music is lighthearted and the lyrics sung in English -- the title track is the only song with French lyrics, and these are sung with a fake English accent! The lush voice of singer Fran Losier was Montreal's main asset. Comfortable in folk ("Circles ...

After living in Hawaii âagainâ from 1999 to 2003, and basically calling it quits with his music career, he began writing again in 2003 thanks in part to a birthday party early that year in Hawaii at the home of one of his long time friends and musician buddies. The focus now is on his own genre of music appropriately named, âNueVision Jazzâ. Classically trained on oboe and credited with being one of the youngest members of ...
