$38.69 When Green Day and The Offspring re-introduced the American public to punk in the early '90s, it was only natural that a few old-timers would try to capitalize (witness the Sex Pistols). Bad Religion was one of those who made the jump to the majors with 1993's RECIPE FOR HATE, but it is unfair to accuse them of trying to ride the coattails of their more successful brethren. On their fourth Atlantic release, NO SUBSTANCE, they continue making punk rock music in the same uncompromising style that served them so well for the first 16 years.

| | Pebbles Vol. 7: Chicago Part 2 CD (1994)
Maximum:Jessica Simpson
$12.65 Subtitled - Chicago 2. The second of the Chicago area-related Pebbles compilations, drawn from various Pebbles High Times & other compilations. 23 tracks of original '60s punk & psych classics. AIP. 1994.
Due to mastering error, tracks on the CD differ from the listing on the tray card: The Cryan Shames' Ben Franklin's Almanac is listed on the tray card but is not on the CD. The Boyz' Come With Me is not listed on the tray card but is on the CD.
The second volume of Pebbles that is devoted to Chicago is similar to its predecessor, Pebbles, Vol. 6. It includes an early recording by the Ides of March, who later changed their sound and scored a big hit with "Vehicle"; a track by Gary & the Knight Lites, who later became the American Breed; and numerous selections from obscure '60s garage bands with some connections to the Windy City. While some of these bands may have been influenced by Chicago blues, they seem to have been more influenced by the British Invasion, Bob Dylan, other '60s garage bands, and '50s rock & roll; indeed, the album features remakes of songs by the Who ("I Can't Explain"), the Rolling Stones ("The Spider & the Fly"), the Animals ("I'm Gonna Change" and "I'm Cryin'"), ...
| | Eric Marienthal Sweet Talk CD (2003)
Maximum:Jessica Simpson
$14.15 Eric Marienthal is a technically skilled altoist with a soulful tone and an appealing style. Unfortunately, many of his recordings are strictly for the commercial market, such as Sweet Talk. Marienthal's solos are full of spirit and color but the backup groups, which often include keyboardist Jeff Lorber along with occasional vocalists, are mundane and lack much personality. The same can be said for the set of originals, including a song apiece from Stevie Wonder and Ivan Lins. Marienthal, who was brilliant on his 1990 release Crossroads and is at his best when playing with Chick Corea's Elektric Band, mostly sounds like he is coasting on Sweet Talk, making this an OK but forgettable release. ~ Scott Yanow
Gene Lake, Chris Parker (drums); Marc Quinones (congas, percussion).
Personnel: Eric Marienthal (soprano saxophone, alto saxophone); Melvin Davis (vocals, drum programming); Ivan Lins, Cassandra Reed (vocals); Chuck Loeb (guitar, keyboards, drum programming, ...

| | DJ T Body Language Vol. 2 CD (2006) Remixes
Maximum:Jessica Simpson
$11.39 The second in the Body Language mix series comes courtesy of label co-founder DJ T, who covers everything from Carl Craig tweaking Theo Parrish to Isolée's great reworking of Ricardo Villalobos' "What You Say Is More Than I Can Say" -- if nothing else, DJ T has his history down cold. Understandable trainspotting aside, Body Language, Vol. 2 deserves credit for being one of the better mix discs in terms of track selection from 2006, starting with a slow build into the Other People Place's understated anthem "Let Me Be Me." Standout song choices include Einzelkind's coldly funky "Marsha" -- followed by the even colder and sharper kick of Tensnake's "Around the House" -- and Gui Boratto's "Arquipelago," especially its drone-tinged break. Tiefschwarz's "Damage (M.A.N.D.Y. Dub Mix)" should be more of a highlight than it ...

| | John Lennon Imagine CD (1971) Japan; Limited Edition; Mini LP Sleeve
Maximum:Jessica Simpson
$19.69 On two other songs where Yoko is not the dominant theme, she is nevertheless invoked through the "oh no, oh no" refrain. That's not to say that love songs predominate. Half of the material covers similar terrain to PLASTIC ONO BAND, but the themes are balanced by hope and even light-heartedness. "Crippled Inside" is leavened by its country stylings including Dobro, courtesy of George Harrison, who also spices up two of the album's pivotal tracks, "Gimme Some Truth" and "How Do You Sleep?" (the latter is a vitriolic attack on Paul McCartney). Outside of PLASTIC ONO BAND, this may be Lennon's finest solo album.
