Legacy Of Hate album
$10.45 Originally released in 1996, their fifth release was a greatsuccess for these masters of melodic metal. For the first time, choirs and a symphonic orchestra are introduced to their music and the effect is amazing. Now includes the bonus track 'When The Night Meets The Day'. 13 tracks
Episode is indeed a big step for Stratovarius. It's the album on which they finally reached the sound that would last for years. So everything seems to be all right, except for the fact that Episode doesn't work so well as a whole. There are perfect hits like "Father Time," "Will the Sun Rise," and "Speed of Light," but the rest of the material fails in comparison, as is isn't as catchy or well put together. But despite these small lacks, Episode is very enjoyable. Each member of Stratovarius is a virtuoso of his instrument, and ever since Fourth Dimension they've played very well together. The best thing, however, is the diverse sound, which compensates for the lack of good songs. So, if you enjoyed the last two Stratovarius albums, you will love Episode. ~ Antti J. Ravelin
Stratovarius: Timo Kotipelto (vocals); Timo Tolkki (guitar); Jens Johansson (keyboards); Jari Kainulainen (bass); Jorg Michael (drums).

Stratovarius experiments with choirs and arrangements for orchestra on its sixth album, Visions, a concept album paying tribute to Nostradamus. It's as ambitious as neoclassical metal gets, and although there are some fine moments on the record, too much of the material sinks under its own weight, particularly the ten-minute title track. ...

| | Paragon Revenge CD (2005) Bonus Track
Legacy Of Hate CD music
$10.69 Hamburg natives Paragon often get automatically lumped into the power metal category because they play metal that's both melodic and filled with "Dungeons & Dragons" lyrics; but they could just as accurately be described as a "heritage" metal act, thanks to parallels in earlier bands like Dio, Manilla Road, and Germany's own Grave Digger, as much as the thrash-infused, post-Helloween set. Really, such particulars matter little, other than to highlight the fact that their albums -- including 2005's Revenge, their sixth overall -- possess a decidedly "retro," 1980s feel about them, harking back to heavy metal's simpler, more innocent, and romanticized infancy. Or, as detractors might describe it: it means their lyrics are pretty dumb, with the aforementioned D&D themes regularly culminating in the painfully basic one-word choruses (à la Grim Reaper) of opening trio "Impaler," "Assassins," and "Traitor" -- not to mention the title track. The nine-minute epic "Masters of the Seas" is thankfully significantly more elaborate and dredges up memories of swashbuckling pirate metal troupe Running Wild, to boot, while majestic, slower-paced anthems such as "Symphony of Pain" and "Empire of the Lost" wear their Saxon influences proudly on their sleeves. Polish it all off with a few pure speed metal romps ("The Battle Rages On," "The Art of War") in the image of Rage, a remarkably earnest cover of Manowar's "The Gods Made Heavy Metal," and reliably explosive lead guitar playing that often proves the highlight of the whole experience, and there should be little doubt left in readers' minds as to whether they'll love or hate Paragon's music. Anything in between is quite frankly out of the question. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Soilent Green Pussysoul CD (1995) Remastered
Legacy Of Hate songs
$10.25 This is Soilent Green's first full-length, and while not as fully developed as its follow-up, Sewn Mouth Secrets, it shows that the band already had its quick-changing, Southern-hardcore-metal hybrid pretty much in place by this point. Of all the band's albums, this one has the biggest death metal quotient (especially in terms of the vocals), but elements of doom metal, Southern rock, grindcore, Melvins-like sludge, Pantera-type groove-metal, and more are also on hand throughout. Highlights such as "Slapfuck," "Zebra Zombies," and the oddly titled "Golfers Just Love Punishment" do a good job of weaving all these different strands together, and have plenty of catchy, heavy riffs and breakdowns as well. There are great parts throughout the rest of the album, too, but a few songs feel disjointed, not flowing together very well from one section to the next (in contrast to Sewn Mouth Secrets). The other slight drawback is frontman Ben Falgoust's vocals: As with the later albums, he uses several different voices, from guttural growls to high-pitched black metal-type shrieking, but on this album he also uses a sort of full-throated, bellowing style that doesn't quite work with the music (he dropped that particular voice on later albums). Keeping these minor flaws in mind, this album still stands out from at least 90 percent of the underground metal crowd in terms of ...
