Riding high on the success of their second full-length album VENI VIDI VICIOUS, and the singles collection YOUR NEW FAVOURITE BAND, the Hives returned to blow more doors open with 2004's TYRANNOSAURUS HIVES. Steeped inexorably in the influence of the Stooges, the New York Dolls, and the nervous, jittery punk and New Wave of CBGB's golden era, this Swedish quintet offers up a rock & roll brew difficult to resist. With their dependably raucous party vibe, the Hives churn out spastic, riff-driven tunes with sing-along choruses over taunt grooves and jackhammer rhythms.
From tongue-in-cheek monster-movie blues ("Diabolic Scheme") to the herky-jerky, Devo-esque "Two-Timing Touch and Broken Bones," to the bouncy fun of the album's lead-off single "Walk Idiot Walk," the Hives push all the right rock buttons. Garage-bred aesthetics, like fist-pumping anthemic choruses and singer Howlin' Pelle Almquist's rasp-scream, are nicely counterbalanced by crisp production and the occasional keyboard embellishment. While they're not stunningly original, it is hard to argue with the Hives. This is everything rock music should be--catchy, rhythmically infectious, and unapologetically wild.
Japanese pressing of the Swedish garage rock heroes' 2004 album features 14 tracks including two bonus tracks, 'Up Tight' & 'The Hives Meet The Norm'. Includes the first hit single 'Walk Idiot Walk'. Polydor.
The Japanese edition includes two additional tracks.Spin (p.66) - Ranked #13 in Spin's "40 Best Albums of the Year" - "[A] marvelous example of the white-hot advances in Swedish rock technology." Entertainment Weekly (p.106) - 3 1/2 stars out of 5 - "The Hives may be hard-partying rock animals, but from the sound of TYRANNOSAURUS HIVES, they're also a tribute to the precision and power of Swedish engineering." Q (p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A]n album of super-fast songs featuring yelping, punchy riffs..." Uncut (p.91) - 3 stars out of 5 - "TYRANNOSAURUS HIVES contains hints of artistic depth." Alternative Press (p.117) - 4 out of 5 - "What is in abundance are retro-punk vibes, raw garage rave-ups and unabashed new wave." CMJ (p.4) - "The good thing is that they haven't mellowed - the sweaty Swedes strike a balance between tailored rock hooks and a chaotic punkish performance." Mojo (Publisher) (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A] razor sharp updating of previous themes....[T]heir guitar throttling raison d'ˆtre still packs an infectious pop wallop." $14.29 EarthBeat! Records celebrates its 20th anniversary with a compilation drawn from both the EarthBeat! and Music for Little People labels, originally issued on albums between 1989 and 2002, focusing on some of the best-known songs of the folk revival and the civil rights movement of the 1960s. There are stirring performances by unusual combinations of artists, starting with Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land," performed by Willie Nelson, Maria Muldaur, Tom Paxton, and John McCutcheon. Other notable folk, blues, and soul performers include Richie Havens (on a medley of spirituals), Taj Mahal ("Follow the Drinking Gourd"), and Wilson Pickett ("Don't Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down"). A cappella groups the Persuasions and Sweet Honey in the Rock are featured, and there are narrations spoken by actors Ted Danson and Danny Glover. Although the music was recorded primarily in the 1990s, it speaks to a continuing tradition of activism and the songs that have accompanied it in earlier decades, and that seems to be the point -- that the movement for freedom, extending back to the abolitionism of the 19th century and the labor struggles of the Great Depression, and which found mass recognition in the '60s, continued to progress through the end of the 20th century, singing hopefully all the while. ~ William Ruhlmann

$14.19 An incredible blend of progressive world electronic jazz, played on the 10-string Chapman Stick ® and featuring some of Minnesota's Twin Cities greatest musicians including Drums, Congas, Sax, Bass Clarinet, Tuba, Viola and Guitar. In this album, Japhlet's first official release, he presents his musical vision is it's most colorful form yet. Featuring his original stylings in tracks such as Cobblestone Stairs and Tzejá, to his unique genre-bending and Stick laden Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove, this album is for everyone. Helping him throughout are some of Minneapolis's greatest drummers and musicians, including Kevin Washington, known for his work with Jazz greats such as Giacomo Aula, "Fathead" Newman and his innovative band Moveable Feast, featuring some of Prince's band's alumni (also available on CDBaby). Haralds Bondaris takes the groove to new heights on the Progressive masterpiece "Isolation", by Tubist Stefan Kac. Greg Schutte joins him on Tzejá with S. Kac on Tuba. Doug Little plays Bass Clarinet and Sax on 2 tracks, and Eliezer Freitas-Santos rips up the congas on Chick Corea's classic "Señor Mouse". Part I is jazzier and more accessible by the average listener, while Part II brings Japhlet's work with electronics, world, samples and ambient to the forefront. A sure buy for any fan of new modern music, all played on the unique instrument that is the Chapman Stick, a 10-stringed tapping instrument created by Emmett Chapman and sold for the first time in 1974. Here is what some people are saying about "JBA":"I greatly enjoyed the music, cover art, directions and style, - everything. I love his approach to jazz. I think of it as "living jazz" and not an old estate to be managed. This album holds great promise and seems perfectly planned in all the right directions."-Emmett Chapman, Inventor of the Chapman Stick ® and renown player."One of the best CDs I received ...
