The singer for His Name Is Alive, Denise James flies solo for the second time on the 2004 disc IT'S NOT ENOUGH TO LOVE, with the able assistance of producer-trumpeter-guitarist Matthew Smith.
With her second solo album It's Not Enough to Love, Denise James comes into her own as a pop chanteuse. Borrowing the best of Petula Clark's vivaciousness and Nico's world-weariness, James nevertheless sounds uniquely herself on sweetly bouncy songs like "Hold On This Time," as well as the droning "Absolutely Sad." That the album has a just-slightly updated-'60s sound doesn't come as much of a surprise, considering that her debut album leaned that way, and that It's Not Enough to Love features the involvement of retro-influenced sonic masterminds Jim Diamond, who engineered the album, and Matthew Smith, who produced it. Smith also produced James' self-titled debut, but this collaboration is more fully realized; James and Smith's voices and musical ideas are so similar here that when he contributes backing vocals on "Come Home to Me," they almost sound like male and female versions of the same person. And as well-done as Denise James' flights of fancy were, the more unified sound that James presents here really pays off, creating a beautifully hazy atmosphere that peaks on jangly ballads like "Love Has Got Me Crying Again" and "Your Every Word," and the softer-than-soft "Don't Let Her Go This Time." Meanwhile, the instrumental "Just Like That" shows off James' guitar prowess, as well as her stint with Warren Defever's Dirt Eaters did. At ten-tracks long, It's Not Enough to Love is somewhat on the short side, but that just leaves listeners wanting more of James' honeyed voice and smart songwriting. ~ Heather Phares

It's Not Enough To Love album
$21.00 Comprised of 18 tracks culled from the singer/composer's first three decades, The Very Best of Enya was pieced together by the artist herself, along with longtime collaborators Nicky and Roma Ryan. Luckily, the trio seems enamored by most of the same songs that the general public is, resulting in one of those rare "greatest-hits" collections that goes deep without depriving the listener of the essentials. With tunes like "Orinoco Flow," "Caribbean Blue," and "Book of Days" in the pot and out of the way, it's easier to appreciate hidden gems like "Cursum Perficio," "Boadicea," "Trains and Winter Rains," and "Anywhere Is." Also notable is the inclusion of "May It Be" and a previously unreleased version of "Aníron (I Desire)," both of which originally appeared on the soundtrack for the first chapter of Peter Jackson's beloved Lord of the Rings trilogy. ~ James Christopher Monger

It's Not Enough To Love CD music
$19.79 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; ...

Boasting the awesome "Chemical Warfare," a regular staple of Slayer's live shows, the Haunting the Chapel EP was a more crucial stepping stone in the legendary L.A. band's career development than many give it credit for. Issued in between the band's very promising debut and the following year's more sonically ripened Hell Awaits, Haunting the Chapel offers important clues about this transition period, which saw Slayer's rock-based song structures give ...
| | Stryper Murder By Pride CD (2009)
It's Not Enough To Love CD music
$10.65 After the original Stryper lineup (minus bassist Tim Gaines) reunited for 2005's somewhat alternative/nu-metal tinged REBORN, the band made a stylistic return to form with MURDER BY PRIDE. Brimming with harmonized twin guitar leads, big hair metal-approved shout-along hooks, and Michael Sweet's trademark soaring, Dennis DeYoung-esque vocals, the album rivals the best of Styper's `80s output, including the genre-defining ...
| | Hammerfall Legacy Of Kings CD (1998)
It's Not Enough To Love music CDs
$12.85 Cleaner and slicker than their debut, Legacy of Kings was the highly anticipated follow-up to Hammerfall's singular revival of '80s-style power metal Glory to the Brave. Bursting on the European metal scene in 1997, and almost single-handedly reviving an entire genre, Hammerfall placed themselves among the '90s vanguard with their double bass driven, dungeons and dragons epic metal that echoed "pure metal" strains reminiscent of Manowar and European old-school champions Helloween. After breaking sales records and shocking everyone with their music's stunning popularity, the lineup of Joacim Cans (vocals), Patrik Räfling (drums), Oscar Dronjak (guitars), Stefan Elmgren (guitars), and Magus Rosén (bass) returned to the studio greatly encouraged by their success and the unbelievable re-emergence of the power metal they practiced. The resulting collection was strong and steady, if a little predictable. Things start off nicely as four double bass rockers set a blinding pace. With it's exceptional chorus, "Dreamland" represents the musical high point ...
| | Maynard Ferguson Live From San Francisco CD (1983)
It's Not Enough To Love songs
$11.39 Live from San Francisco was Maynard Ferguson's strongest jazz album in quite a few years. Utilizing a small big band comprised of 12 pieces, Ferguson is in consistently fiery form during a session recorded live at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. "Bebop Buffet" (which has quotes from many bop classics) is a high point, and these versions of "Lush Life" and "On the Sunny Side of the Street" (along with four group originals) are quite enjoyable; baritonist Denis DiBlasio's arrangements are a major asset. ~ Scott Yanow
