Boy album
$11.18 With Adam Lambert, American Idol finally got a finalist who was completely, utterly contemporary, aware of what's hip in music and culture and aware of how music is made and consumed in 2009, never seeming to try to follow fads or set trends, just embodying the time. Mercifully, he came in second to Kris Allen, for if he came in first he may have had to tame his self-styled glamazon ways. A second place finish allowed Lambert to come out of the closet and indulge in his penchant for theater on his debut, For Your Entertainment -- which isn't quite the same thing as camp, for if Adam Lambert is anything, he's earnest about his dress-up, never winking at the audience because he doesn't think there's much funny about his glitter and mascara: that's just what pop stars are supposed to do. He's learned that by listening to his stacks of Queen and Bowie records, from watching old MTV videos on YouTube, from living in a present that always competes with the ever-present past, so he takes it all at face value, mixing up arena rock guitars, new wave, disco, operatic overdubs with a constant electro pulse, glassy modern R&B, and the vague Euro strains of new millennium teen pop. All this makes For Your Entertainment very, very modern in a way few mainstream pop albums are in 2009, ...

| | Stoned Grace Cast The First Stone CD (2007)
Boy CD music
$6.69 By any standard, Stoned Grace is an unconventional band. The NY/NJ-based quartet take the larger-than-life mystique of classic/progressive rock and modernize it with equal parts old school R&B and funk to unleash a style of melodic hard rock that’s nearly irresistible. While there are echoes of the past in their music, it merely acts as a foundation for the group’s distinctive sound. Stoned Grace’s ambitious debut CD, Cast the First Stone, sidesteps what’s going on in today’s commercial marketplace while focusing on the band’s forte of propulsive, soulful rock. On an album that is linear and diverse but not random, the songs of Cast The First Stone reflect positive lyrical messages delivered through heavy yet soulful music that captures the kinetic energy and compelling force of the band’s live show. It may be just the album you’ve been waiting for. The members of Stoned Grace share a palpable chemistry that’s evident in the band members’ dynamic interrelation, which carries over into every aspect of the music, on stage and off. Lead guitarist, chief songwriter and founder of the group Eddie Kish is the self-confessed “classic rock guy” who was influenced to pick up the guitar at age 5 after being forever smitten by the music of Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Cream and Santana. On the other hand, Eddie jokes good-naturedly, Stoned Grace’s charismatic vocalist, Justin Wade, “wouldn’t know classic rock if he tripped over it.” In fact, Justin (who is also an accomplished bassist) was schooled on the music of Earth Wind & Fire, George Clinton, the Gap Band and a plethora of gospel artists. The two met by accident when Justin recorded vocal demos at Morningstar Studios, which is owned and operated by Eddie, for a wedding band he was fronting. “A couple of weeks after that session, Ed called me,” Justin remembers. “He said, ‘I know you were recording R&B, but have you ever thought about singing rock?’ We started hanging out and it just clicked.” With the addition of a killer rhythm section, the duo created the musical vision that would become Stoned Grace. Drummer Daryl Anderson is a seasoned professional who also runs a successful drum manufacturing and restoration business. Bassist Marco Gallipoli developed his rhythmic versatility playing in everything from hardcore and punk to jam bands. Says Marco, who admires bassists Flea, Les Claypool and 311’s Peanut, “Stoned Grace keeps my focus because I get to really play and be very experimental in this band.”Early Stoned Grace demos posted by Eddie on the artist development site Starpolish.com drew high praise from rock critic Gail Worley, who raved: “Stoned Grace, a melodic hard rock quartet from New Jersey, [have] something very fresh going on.
