| | Jimmy Thackery Whiskey Store Live! CD (2004)
Soul Deeper: Live At The Basement
$13.59 The tour to support 2002's Whiskey Store album featuring guitarists Jimmy Thackery and Tab Benoit is captured here in all of its raging six-string glory. Not just for those who own the studio album, this disc repeats six tracks, but they are overhauled and extended so radically (the title cut is nearly tripled in length to a nine-minute blowout), that it's far from a cash-generating retread. Although the formidable Double Trouble rhythm section stayed home, road tested Thackery's saxist Jimmy Carpenter jumps aboard, as does B-3 keyboardist Ken Faltinson, and both ignite the concert sparks substantially. Benoit, who takes the majority of the vocals, brings versions of classics like "I Got Loaded" and Otis Redding's "These ...

Soul Deeper: Live At The Basement
$12.49 Mychael Danna's score for the 2006 film THE NATIVITY STORY, directed by Catherine Hardwicke, establishes a moving musical backdrop for the Biblical tale. Despite the story's setting in the ancient Middle East, Danna (renowned for his mood-driven work with Canadian director Atom Egoyan) largely uses instruments from Europe's Renaissance period, and incorporates Gregorian chants, resulting in evocative (if historically inaccurate) pieces, as best exemplified by "The Annunciation."

| | Phalen, Will & The Stereo Addicts Visions & Revisions CD (2007)
Soul Deeper: Live At The Basement
$11.49 Visions & RevisionsAfter splitting with the Madison funk-rock band, the Mosaic, and immersing himself for a time in the world of Spanish flamenco, Will Phalen decided it was time to return to his folk-rock roots and strike out on his own. In the cold winter months of 2005, Will began writing new songs and experimenting with unconventional recording techniques as he sought a way to blend new technologies and sounds with the familiar forms of popular music — to create a sort of Cosmic American Music, borrowing a term coined by country-rock pioneer, Gram Parsons. These early trials laid the ground work for what would become Visions & Revisions. When Andy Gulotta (founding member of seminal Milwaukee rock band Freshwater Collins) heard the recordings and came on board, the project quickly changed shape as new ideas were thrown into the sonic mix and Phalen’s solo project morphed into an ensemble work featuring a host of the upper Midwest’s finest musical and creative minds, now known collectively as the Stereo Addicts. The sounds found on Visions & Revisions represent a pastiche of folk guitars, old-timey banjos, psychedelic flashbacks, ambient noise, electronic drones and driving rock ‘n roll rhythms that create the impression that a not-so-distant past may at last be meeting and coexisting with a not-so-distant future. Winding through this sonic patchwork, Phalen’s lyrics convey a sense of longing and contemplation reminiscent of icy Midwestern winters and dreary suburban isolation from which the only solace is love and music. Will PhalenWill Phalen lives, works and creates in the Midwest, dividing his time between his favorite American cities: Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago. After learning drums and guitar at the age of twelve he began playing in rock bands and hasn’t stopped. In addition to his first love, rock ’n roll, Will continues to delve into and draw from the worlds of folk, funk, jazz, hip-hop, flamenco and country while experimenting with new sonic textures, song forms and digital wizardry. The Stereo AddictsThough it started ...
