$12.59 As any quick perusal of old Top 40 rock & roll station playlists will attest, singles were where the shakin' action was, as rock & roll albums were scarce as hen's teeth back in those pre-Beatle days. But when the record companies decided to issue one, it was usually an artifact of high rockin' value and some major influence. Naysayers to the contrary, this debut album by the Northwest's first great rock & roll combo is just such an artifact. The Wailers dispensed crude, greasy, largely instrumental rock & roll music for those who came to shake it up and shake it down, and it's all on fine, rhythmic, open display here. This album is amazing in its own simplistic, nuthin'-special way, its crudity almost palpable. There's only one vocal aboard, Kent Morrill's "Dirty Robber," later covered and torched by the Sonics. Everything else is built on the riff-sturdy bones of their biggest hit, "Tall Cool One." With two guitars, piano, sax, and drums -- no bass player anywhere on here, another crudeness indicator of the times and locale it was recorded in -- all blasting away like they're working a VFW Hall dance, hoof shakers like "Wailin'," "Shanghaied," "Beat Guitar" (featured in the soundtrack of the misguided Jerry Lee Lewis bioflick Great Balls Of Fire), and "Gunnin' For Peter" stand loud and proud as teen hall pre-Beatle rock & roll at its finest. ...

Ten years after their breakthrough hit, "Keep 'Em Separated," and 14 years after their debut, the Offspring maintains pace with SPLINTER. Since the last release, the band has lost longtime drummer Ron Welty, who's replaced here by A Perfect Circle skins-pounder Josh Freese. There's no discernible let-up in momentum; Dexter and company are essentially pursuing the same stylistic path they've been on from the beginning. Even though they achieved fame at the tail end of the grunge era, their '80s beginnings make them the grand old men of third-wave punk, and SPLINTER consequently bears a lot more gravitas than the efforts of younger pop-punks.
As usual, the band throws in a touch of ska-punk, this time with cautionary drinking ...

| | Stone Sour Come What(Ever) May CD (2006) With DVD; Special Edition
Em Algum Lugar album
$18.75 This Special Edition version of COME WHAT(EVER) MAY includes six previously unreleased tracks, as well as a bonus DVD featuring live concert footage and four music videos produced to promote the album.
Before joining Slipknot, guitarist Jim Root and vocalist Corey Taylor fronted Stone Sour, an alt-metal act with melodic sensibilities. The success of Slipknot inspired Root and Taylor to reform their original outfit, and the band's self-titled debut proved a success. Stone Sour's sound is reminiscent of Slipknot's, yet is distinctive enough to stand on its own merits.
COME WHAT(EVER) MAY, the group's sophomore effort, pushes Stone Sour's sound a bit further than its predecessor. While the album's sonic attack is still unremittingly heavy, with thunderous drums and distortion-saturated riffs, there's also a keen sense of accessibility that foregrounds melody and eschews thrash in favor of flat-out hard rock. These elements, combined with Taylor's throaty voice, place Stone Sour a cut above your average post-grunge metal outfit, and COME WHAT(EVER) MAY hints that the group may be poised ...
