The majority of Brazilian vocalists gravitate towards singing about love and sex - not that there's anything wrong with that. But once in a while, it's nice to stumble onto an artist like Adriana Calcanhotto, whose range of emotion runs the gamut from flat-out heartbreaking to straight-up silly.

Adriana Partimpim album
$9.89 After the amazing "69 Love Songs," it's pretty safe to refer to Stephin Merritt as a genius. His skill and craftsmanship in service to the popular song puts him in the league of the great pop writers of the 20th Century. His lyrical wit can be funny, cutting, and heartbreaking simultaneously. It's never clever for the sake of being clever; it's always used to convey emotion.

There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.
In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like "Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the gorgeous, poignant "Redemption Song" proves. Of course, a true sampling of Marley's output would require some early ska material, the Wailer's debut (CATCH ...
| | Guilty: 30 Years Of Randy Newman CDs (1998)
Adriana Partimpim music CDs
$41.59 Includes an 80-page booklet with liner notes by Randy Newman, Lenny Waronker, Russ Titelman, and Timothy White as well as complete album discography.
This four-disc set fulfills two functions: on its first two discs, it provides the perfect guide for those uninitiated to Newman's world. The third disc of previously unreleased tracks and the fourth, containing selections from Newman's film scores, are aimed at the Newman completist. In both cases it works well. The songs on the first two discs are well chosen, perfectly illuminating the irony-drenched, cynical, but often humorous (however darkly) approach Newman always took to songwriting. On "Political Science" he mocks diplomatic relations, and on the beautiful, downcast "I Think It's Going to Rain Today" he quietly bemoans the state of humanity over a breathtaking melody.
Listeners will be reminded that Newman shone as a melodist, belonging in the first rank of American composers alongside Gershwin and Stephen Foster. The rarities disc (which features both demo versions of familiar songs and tunes never heard on a Newman album in any form) will be the ...

| | Francoise Hardy Les Chansons D'Amour CD (1997)
Adriana Partimpim CD music
$8.65 Charming French chanteuse Francoise Hardy enchantingly sings 22 romantic songs on this endearing collection, which includes " Ce Petite Coeur" and "L'amitie."
This extremely budget-looking CD -- it's almost arbitrary as to what label or catalog number is listed given how many names and numbers are floating around, and there are no liner notes -- collects 18 tracks from the 1980s, though one recording from 1992 does sneak into the listing. Françoise Hardy's voice was still fine on this average Continental Europop material, although the production is dated in a slick 1980s adult contemporary way (albeit sometimes with mild dance currents). At times Hardy's vocals retain that sense of measured sensuality so integral to her larger body of work, and once in a while the quality level rises, as on "Vibrations," which has far more of a guitar rock feel than most of its surroundings. And the 1992 recording -- a mournful low-key rearrangement of "Il N'y a Pas d'Amour Heureux" with classical piano and accordion -- is actually pretty good. ~ Richie Unterberger
This extremely budget-looking CD -- it's almost arbitrary as to what label or catalog number is listed given how many names and numbers are floating around, and there are no liner notes -- collects 18 tracks from the 1980s, though one recording from 1992 does sneak into the listing. And that's bad news for the Françoise Hardy novice, because the 1980s were her decade horriblis, and woe to the unsuspecting beginner who picks it up thinking it might be a representative sampling of some of her best, or at least better, work. Hardy's voice was still fine, but it wasn't being used to good effect on this average Continental '80s Europop material, much of which was, to be fair as to where to pin the blame, written or co-written by Hardy herself. The biggest strike of all against this stuff was the production, which is horribly dated in a slick, 1980s adult contemporary way (albeit sometimes with mild dance currents). At times Hardy's vocals did retain that sense of measured sensuality so integral to her large body of quality material, but at others it didn't even possess that. Just once in a while, the level does rise above the crummy, as on "Vibrations," which has far more of a guitar rock feel than most of its surroundings. The remake of her '60s classic "Je Ne Suis la Pour Personne" predictably adds insult to injury, though actually the mournful low-key rearrangement ...
