$5.95 Since it was recorded during the '80s, Home for Christmas sounds a bit too slick, especially for fans of her early material, but it's nevertheless a reasonably enjoyable holiday record, thanks to Dolly's irrepressible charm. ~ Thom Owens

| | Alan Jackson Precious Memories CD (2006)
I Wouldn't Miss It CD music
$10.39 On 2006's PRECIOUS MEMORIES, country superstar Alan Jackson ventures into gospel territory, offering up a set of warm and inviting faith-themed songs. These spare tracks feature no percussion and rely almost solely on piano and acoustic guitar, allowing the focus to remain on Jackson's resonant vocals and the songs' devoutly Christian lyrics. Although praising Jesus is clearly the core of this album, the beautifully minimalist renderings of spiritual classics are so soothing and pleasant that the disc's appeal ...
| | Tracy Byrd Love Lessons CD (1995)
I Wouldn't Miss It music CDs
$6.85 Byrd has a talent for saving potential novelty songs from sounding overtly trite and corny. This gift especially helps with upbeat tracks like the rowdy dance club-bound "Honky-Tonk Dancing Machine," and the joyous sing-along, "Walking To Jerusalem." Both display Byrd's confidence and enthusiasm, qualities also captured by his facile way with a romatic ballad, such as the title track. There's also a strong sense of conviction that rumbles within Byrd's deep, resonant Texas voice, especially when he tackles a traditional chestnut like Bill Anderson's tasty shuffle, "You Lied To Me."
Thanks to a sincere delivery, some strong material, and an ability to combine past traditions with contemporary expectations, Tracy Byrd has gained considerable credibility.
On his third album Love Lessons, Tracy Byrd doesn't come up with quite as winning a collection as he did on No Ordinary Man, but he comes close ...

| | Big Bill Broonzy 1949-1951 CD (2004)
I Wouldn't Miss It CD music
$15.49 Curiously, the years 1949-1951 are the least documented on disc of Big Bill Broonzy's career. He was, in fact, very busy, shuttling between Chicago and New York, one of the premier acoustic blues figures from the old Mississippi school who was still active on the instrument. While he wasn't averse to playing up the songster side a little bit, he was, in fact, a very sophisticated figure, and a polished raconteur. In fact, it wasn't until 1949 that his surname was added to records -- an indication of how big a star he'd been. It's notable, too, that after World War II he moved away from playing to black audiences, focusing on people who loved jazz and folk music, helping to bring those strands together -- and also beginning to perform overseas. The dearth of material from this three-year period makes this disc especially valuable. It's easy to hear the obvious fluency in his playing, far removed from his Delta roots by now, and owing a great deal to players like ...
| | Presets Beams CD (2005) Enhanced CD
I Wouldn't Miss It music CDs
$11.49 The Presets' first full-length record differs slightly from their more happy-go-lucky Aussie dance compatriots, mostly for aesthetic reasons. The detached nature of Beams is more about subtle darkness and underlying sinister intentions, as evidenced on the slow-building opener, "Steamworks" -- which begins with the bassline from "Billie Jean" and moves into much more explosive sonic territory (and a rave horn for good measure). Beams represents a uneasy yet unforgettable combination of '80s gaudy pop flair and dark, propulsive rave beats, all with an unsubtle sense of humor. Borrowing nothing from their timid Blow Up EP (most of the songs from that release have been since adapted in live shows to sound more similar to Beams), the Presets have an impulsive, almost primitive charm to their dance music. With heavy bass throughout, keyboardist/vocalist Julian Hamilton experiments with heavy distortion and vocal alterations. On the wild electro-pop treat "Down Down Down," the group keeps to the song's namesake and effortlessly weaves in and out of looped tambourine percussion and dirty synth beats. The middle section is surprisingly experimental given the concise pop of "Are You the One?," "Down Down Down," and the minimalist, winsome cool of "The Girl and the Sea" (it's the only time Hamilton shows some true restraint in his singing, and it gives the song a mysterious edge throughout). "Worms" plods along to a wince-inducing squelching keyboard loop and doesn't feel like anything more than an unrealized ...
