Displaying much more emotional range than many of its contemporaries, In the Nightside Eclipse combines black metal's noisy fury with synth arrangements and dark, haunting medieval chords and melodies, thus evoking moods of sorrow and loneliness. Awash in pagan imagery, the album was recorded in the Memorial Hall of Edvard Grieg for additional atmosphere, indicative of the record's ambition and of the band's willingness to experiment and push the limits of the death metal genre. In fact, In the Nightside Eclipse, although not quite as complex or accessible as its follow-up, is arguably the definitive Norwegian black metal album. ~ Steve Huey
Emperor (Black Metal): Ihsahn (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Samoth (guitar); Tchort (bass instrument); Faust (drums).

Please read my review for "Prometheus: The Discipline Of Fire & Demise". This album is just as good. My only complaint is that the recording lacks bass. In my home stereo it is fine but played in my vehicle it sounds a bit flat. However, pure genius. Submitted by tiborbozi (Echo Bay, ON., Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A masterpiece I cannot believe nobody has reviewed this album. I always wish the album would continue when the last song has finished. Beyond the Great Black Forest is one of my faves. CKtmCaT is a black metal classis. This version has a couple of bomus tracks on it including a Mercyful Fate cover - Gypsy. Submitted by drudow (lawrenceville, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? The symphony of Darkness This masterpiece has nothing to do with any other black metal album, even by Emperor themselves. This is classic music under the cover of the black metal sounding. I am a violinist and am into a lot of classic music, and I can say that this album is sooo classic as nothing else, but you have to have the ear to hear it. Deep, inspiring, powerful, satanic...simply magnificent. The best track is "into the infinity of thoughts"- the most complex and deep af all, setting the stage for a 45 min journey through space and time. You have to hear the album at least 10 times before beginning to realize what is going on in there. Submitted by Jeff (New York, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Absolutely incredible! This album has all the elements (nature, darkness, paganism, hatred, and sorrow) that are associated with a black metal masterpiece. This is truly emperor’s best work. However, if you are not familiar with black metal or emperor and want to buy this album; I suggest you first try “Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk”, because “In the nightside eclipse” might be a little heavier than emperor’s next 3 albums. In The Nightside Eclipse album
$10.69 Often cited as the first true death metal record ever released (Florida's Death had been around just as long but would only make their vinyl debut a few years later), Possessed's Seven Churches took thrash metal's intensity to new levels of brutality. With song titles like "Burning in Hell," "Satan's Curse," and "The Exorcist" (featuring the famous movie's eerie title theme for an intro), the band definitely displayed a strong Slayer influence; but it was Possessed growler Jeff Becerra who first introduced the barely decipherable grunting vocal ...

$9.15 Possibly the first true example of what is commonly called Viking metal, 1988's Blood Fire Death inaugurated an incredibly prolific period in Bathory's history -- so prolific and creative, in fact, that an entire album's worth of material recorded at this time would be shelved for years before eventually finding room for release as 1996's Blood on Ice. Featuring dramatic orchestral arrangements backing horrific banshee cries and galloping battalions of doom and destruction, "Oden's Ride Over Nordland" was as powerful an instrumental mood setter as has ever introduced a heavy metal album. It also boasted something never before heard on a Bathory LP: high audio fidelity, for Blood Fire Death was indeed the group's first to qualify as a professional-sounding recording. The second shock arrived when Quorthon employed a clean singing style (as opposed to his previously preeminent death croak) on the remarkable epic "A Fine Day to Die," whose complex arrangements and wide-ranging use of melody are also far more daring and adventurous than all his previous works. And what may have seemed accidental with the previous year's exceptional Under the Sign of the Black Mark ...

In The Nightside Eclipse album
$14.09 If there's one band that truly embodies anti-commercialism, it's Emperor. Generally regarded as the one true master of the Norwegian-bred black metal art form, the band concocts a staggeringly violent whirlwind of carefully constructed noise resulting in nigh-impermeable records piled high with complex arrangements and heart-bursting violence. So it's no surprise that, for its swan song, the band would issue Prometheus, a birth-to-death concept album of such weight and density that it takes roughly two dozen listens to even begin to appreciate the depth of its composition and its painstaking attention to detail. Accompanying the release of Prometheus was the announcement that it would be Emperor's final word as a band, and listening to the record, it is increasingly apparent that the bandmembers were beginning to take divergent musical paths; drummer Trym and guitarist Samoth had started expressing more interest in gut-level power punches, while frontman Ihsahn wished to ...
