Hilary Duff led a pretty charmed childhood, with her performing career moving from a successful television show as a pre-teen to blockbuster movies and a major recording deal as a teen. Just shy of 17 years old, Duff released her second record, a self-titled follow-up to the hugely successful METAMORPHOSIS. 2004's HILARY DUFF discards the bubble-gum edges of its predecessor and sets forth a certain rock power. Duff's music is no vanity project, and her sophomore release reveals a creative, self-aware artist.
Duff opens with "Fly," an intricately layered, soaring ballad. Throughout the record, Duff's topics focus on the trials of growing up, learning to understand the world, and, of course, love. The songs are exceedingly catchy (the best co-written by Hilary and her sister Haylie) without slipping into repetition. While she shares common ground with Ashlee Simpson and Avril Lavigne at times, Duff has her own pop-rock vision, and she follows it boldly here. Hilary Duff Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews sweet and innocent I really liked just one song on it which is #1 on the cd, but other than that its pretty good. Younger kids would like this cd. Submitted by kristyp29530 (Coward,SC,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
wicked voltage Not intended for younger kids per se, except those with a clear mind for the music, I find this album to just have every possible moment just brimming with masterpiece like a voltage charge. It is hard to describe. The studio work is also completely off the hook. The mixing is the wicked mixing, too. Its just phenom. Submitted by vilmos b (millville, nj) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Hilary Duff Is A Rarified Shine In The Music Fold Hilary Duffs collossally brilliant and slammingly boisterous political orgasm snaps the mind into a seduced train of thought that hypnosis and narcotics could never break, and could indeed be at home with. An album like this with the cosmic mix and contributions of the lead vocalist namesake, the band and their songwriter and producer partners comes along rarely and even then sees the light of success only sparringly. Hilary Duff is the one of those that shines the most. Submitted by America (New York) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Hilary Duff
$12.39 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made.
Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia Records catalogue for her tribute because, as she explains in the liner notes, Davis liked her to sing ballads, and ballads are Horn's specialty. She can slow down time in a unique and spellbinding way. Her sultry and smoky vocals are intimate and conversational, relying on odd metered timing and ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Hilary Duff
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, ...
| | Hilary Duff Metamorphosis CD (2003)
Hilary Duff
$12.59 SANTA CLAUS LANE aside, this is the debut album by the ever-perky Hilary Duff, best known for her title role in the LIZZIE MCGUIRE movie and television series. It's appropriate that one of 2003's "it" girls kicks off her first proper collection of tunes with "So Yesterday," a song that celebrates an assertive present and a bright future. Taking cues from her slightly older peers Avril Lavigne and Michelle Branch, Duff leans towards catchy pop-rock anthems on tracks such as "Come Clean," "Workin' It Out," and "The Math." However, the blonde teen queen also tries on some mid-tempo electronica ("Little Voice") and slower, more introspective songs ("Where Did I Go Right?," "Love Is Just," and "Inner Strength"). ...
| | Ashlee Simpson Autobiography CD (2004)
Hilary Duff
$12.55 With her debut record, AUTOBIOGRAPHY, Ashlee unveils a soul-searching sound that lies somewhere between the precocious explorations of Avril Lavigne and the jaded wanderings of Alanis Morissette. The opening single "Pieces of Me" features an ever-changing musical landscape, with Ashlee's powerful voice fading in and out like the love story of the song itself. The ...
| | Kelly Clarkson Breakaway CD (2004)
Hilary Duff
$9.69 With 2003's THANKFUL, Kelly Clarkson proved that her AMERICAN IDOL win was no fluke by putting out a solid album of gospel-influenced R&B performed with the panache of a seasoned veteran. In late 2004, the Texas native delivered on the promise of her sophomore record's title, BREAKAWAY, by diving headfirst into alternative-rock-flavored pop of the Avril Lavigne/Michelle Branch variety. Though there are still a few R&B-inspired moments here ("Because of You" is a soulful, string-laced ballad in the best Mariah Carey tradition), most of the album has a much harder edge than fans of THANKFUL would likely expect. In other spots, Clarkson goes the moody chanteuse route, particularly on "Addicted," where she channels the spooky melancholy of Fiona Apple with surprising conviction. Clarkson herself co-writes several songs on the disc, which, combined with the record's unexpected musical variety, suggests a talented vocalist coming into her own as an artist as well as a performer.
Kelly Clarkson was the first American Idol winner and the first vocalist to achieve success, but her 2003 debut, Thankful, didn't completely define her outside of the ...
| | Lindsay Lohan Speak CD (2004)
Hilary Duff
$12.59 Following in the footsteps of teen-actress-turned-singing-star Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan delivers SPEAK, an accomplished album of radio-ready pop. Balancing dance-floor grooves of the Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera variety with rock moves borrowed from the Avril Lavigne/Michelle Branch axis, Lohan sings with authority over razor-sharp club beats (the title track, "To Know Your ...
| | Sugar Ray In The Pursuit Of Leisure CD (2003) Enhanced CD
Hilary Duff
$8.55 Why tamper with success? On IN THE PURSUIT OF LEISURE, Sugar Ray sticks pretty close to the style that's proven so successful for them on their previous albums; a peppy mix of ska, pop, hip-hop production techniques, and an early-'80s new wave sensibility. The latter is borne out most obviously in a lively cover version of Joe Jackson's 1979 breakthrough "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" Sugar Ray's particular mix of influences makes them spiritual kin to No Doubt, and in fact, "Mr. Bartender (It's So Easy)" sounds like a strange cross between Sweet's "Love is Like Oxygen" and the No Doubt hit "Hella Good."
While the overall feel of this album will certainly be familiar to fans, Sugar Ray has turned out a fresh batch of tunes that finds them in no real danger of repeating themselves. "Can't Start," with it's amiable folk-guitar-meets-hip-hop-beat feel, is probably the closest thing here to the band's own hit "Every Morning." As long as there ...
| | Steve Howe Masterpiece Guitars CD (2003)
Hilary Duff
$14.69 Mention Steve Howe's name to most people, and they immediately think of his work with the British progressive rock powerhouse Yes. But there is more to Howe than progressive rock; outside of Yes, the guitarist has also embraced Spanish flamenco, ragtime, and many other things. Howe is versatile and eclectic, and on Masterpiece Guitars, he demonstrates that Bill Bruford isn't the only Yes member (past or present) who is capable of playing jazz. Howe co-leads this session with fellow guitarist Martin Taylor, who is primarily a jazz musician -- and the results are a long way from Howe's work with Yes. You won't hear "Close to the Edge," "Long Distance Runaround," "The Gates of Delirium," or "Starship Trooper" on this album. What you will hear is a lot of bop -- very straight-ahead, swinging, acoustic-oriented bop -- and the two guitarists enjoy a strong rapport on original material as well as inspired performances of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile," Jerome Kern's "All the Things You Are," and Lerner & Loewe's "Thank Heaven for Little Girls." On a few occasions, Masterpiece Guitars strays from jazz; Howe's "Tailpiece," for example, is perhaps best described as progressive bluegrass. It certainly has that down-home country twang. But if Masterpiece Guitars offers a few side dishes that aren't jazz, it's safe to say that straight-ahead jazz is the main course. Straight-ahead jazz is Taylor's strong point -- that's what he does best, and on Masterpiece Guitars, jazz also works enjoyably well for the broad-minded Steve Howe. ~ Alex Henderson
