The first of a two-part series, Seedy Gonzales embodies a laid-back "downtown" vibe, a literate-but-not-literal look at city life through the eyes of a sad, cheeky poet. It is, to be sure, exactly what you'd expect from "a cranky ex-pat writer from Prague [singer Johnny Riley] who sings like Lou Reed" and "a New York filmmaker who sings like Lou Barlow [singer-guitarist Jason Orans]."Riley, Orans and drummer Brian Devine met in Los Angeles while they were all working in the film industry. After losing touch for some years, Devine and Orans discovered they had both relocated to NYC. Devine was playing in his other project, Spanish Speaking Psychics with his cousin Jack; Orans and Riley were co-writing songs across the Atlantic while Riley observed a self-imposed exile in the Czech Republic. When Riley came Stateside to visit, Devine dragged his friends into the studio. It was just fun at first. "Next thing we knew," Orans recalls, "we had an album."They had tracked five tunes: A Stones-meets-Junior Kimbrough number "Just Killin' Time (Before Time Kills Me)," the Reed-y story-songs "Italian in NY" and "Maddie's Day," the brooding "Kerouac & Burroughs" and "Love's Theosophy" (an adaptation of Percy Shelley's poem "Love's Philosophy"). The Lodge's Emily Lazar (Jeff Buckley, Lou Reed, Clem Snide) mastered the tracks, and the band christened themselves Seedy Gonzales. Orans explains the name: "Cedric Douglass Gonzales III was the band's first road manager, (back when we were called Up 2 No Good). He died in a tragic accident, and the band continues on in his name as a tribute." That's a lotta hooey-but goofiness and mirth are as much a part of Seedy Gonzales as despair and harsh reality. Throughout their joyous, quirky indie pop is a wry sense of humor that tempers the more serious aspects of their writing and achieves the funny-serious balance found in all accomplished art. "Many of my favorite songwriters are funny," states Orans, listing Randy Newman, Warren Zevon and Vic Chesnutt. "I don't think there's enough smart humor in music these days, and that's what I like best about the band and what makes us a little different. I'd really love to play to an audience who gets us and laughs and cries at the right parts of the songs, you know?"(To Be Continued: stay tuned for part two of the Seedy Gonzales saga, Bird That Sings, due later this year)
Adapter: Percy Bysshe Shelley.
Seedy Gonzales: Jason Orans (vocals, guitar); Johnny Riley (vocals); Jack Devine (guitar, mandolin, harmonica, keyboards, bass guitar); B. Devine (drums).

| | Minus 5 I Don't Know Who I Am CD (2003) Let The War Against Music
Seedy Gonzales CD music
$13.85 Although Scott McCaughey pays his bills as a loyal R.E.M. sideman, the longtime Young Fresh Fellows frontman's Minus 5 project has allowed him to explore his fundamental pop/rock leanings with colleague Peter Buck on albums like 2001's acclaimed Let the War Against Music Begin. Recorded in tandem with that set, I Don't Know Who I Am -- a limited-edition disc reportedly restricted to a pressing of just 2,000 copies -- is far darker and more experimental, as evidenced by the set launcher, "There Is No Music." Meshing a slide guitar with a brooding lo-fi feel, the song's alt-country leanings uneasily shift into the electronic-tinged "Myrna Loy." While there are contagious moments like "Rooting for the Plague" and the profane singalong "I Don't Want to Fuck Off Anymore," tunes like the heady "Disaster Nurse Fang" and "Dear Employer" (which is recycled but drastically stripped-down from its appearance on 2003's Down With Wilco and again boasts Jeff Tweedy) are as off-kilter as these alternative pop luminaries are likely to get. I Don't Know Who I Am may not be the Minus 5 disc fans rely on most of the time, but there's more than just completist filler here. Just check the chiming, Beatlesque brilliance of "Queen's Head" for further proof. ~ John D. Luerssen

| | Erase Errata At Crystal Palace CD (2003)
Seedy Gonzales music CDs
$11.49 Erase Errata's second album, At Crystal Palace, continues the band's ongoing flirtations with order and chaos, ping-ponging between the two with such ease that it's clear that even their most disjointed moments are under their control. Songs such as "Driving Test" and "Go to Sleep" are as angular and tense as ever -- the way Jenny Hoyston snarls "Go to sleep!" on the latter ensures a string of nights spent with eyes wide open -- but every now and then the band lets down its avant-garde and allows some melodic, and even poppy, moments to exist within its formidably sharp music. "Ca. Viewing" is one of Erase Errata's most accessible songs, at once prickly and playful. Meanwhile, "Let's Be Active c/o Club Hott" and "Surprize It's Easter" are both slightly more melodic than their earlier work; Hoyston's vocals come closer to honest-to-goodness singing than they have before, even though both songs feature strange breakdowns where most bands would put choruses. Hoyston's paranoid, soulful wailing on "Matter No Medley" marks a further expansion of the band's sound; she remains one of the most distinctive voices in underground rock, androgynous and fiercely powerful without resorting to histrionics, particularly on "Owls" and "Retreat! The Most Familiar." Hoyston's trumpet also makes a few more appearances on At Crystal Palace than it did on Other Animals, but the most musically remarkable thing about the ...

Seedy Gonzales album
$15.09 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of such ostensibly laconic tunes as "Lonely Girls" and "Righteously." Meanwhile, songs that already had plenty of bite in their studio versions are pumped up to an even more electrifying, visceral level (a bold, crunching "Changed ...

| | Mark Dignam Box Heart Man CD (2005)
Seedy Gonzales songs
$11.99 Mark Dignam begins this album with a light and dreamy blend of pop and alt country on "Divine," which describes the track quite well. Coming from a crop of singer/songwriters who would include Josh Ritter and Josh Rouse, Dignam uses his strong timbre to nail each song to near perfection in the way Ryan Adams honed Gold. "Build" on the other hand is a kind of electro-roots tune with a political message that ambles along easily thanks to Dignam's brilliant melody, a talent that the musician seems to create constantly. "Hope" is more radio-friendly in a pop mode and could be mistaken for the Go-Betweens with the dual harmonies. Perhaps the lone effort that could be mildly disappointing is "Pinwheel" which seems like a patio pop tune in the vein of John Mayer. The miscue is atoned for with the gorgeous, precious and somewhat hymn-like "Ghosts" that has the singer downplaying the vocals in ...
