Recorded live in Chicago, Illinois; Detroit, Michigan; Columbus, Ohio; Minneapolis, Minnesota in October 1996. The summit meeting of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson was a dream come true for guitar fanatics, and surprisingly, it actually met expectations. The trio toured successfully as G3 in 1996, which is when the recordings that comprise Live in Concert were made. Each guitarist has three solo tracks, and they perform together for three tracks. What makes the album work is that it's not simply a shredding showcase; it's a forum for three similarly minded guitarists to play in a sympathetic environment. Contrary to popular belief (at least among certain rock critics), these guitarists aren't simply speed and style demons, they're fully rounded musicians -- and that's ultimately what impresses about Live in Concert. On the individual tracks and the massive jam sessions alike, they know how to deploy their speed-bomb attacks for maximum attack. It is true that when all three cut loose on "Going Down," "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama," and "Red House," it's a little overwhelming, but even at their most extravagant, G3 is tasteful and that's what makes this record a minor treasure for hard rock guitar fanatics. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine G3: Live in Concert brings Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, and Steve Vai's blockbuster 1996 tour to home video. Each of the superstar guitarists -- who had never toured or appeared together previously -- performs three of their definitive pieces, including Satriani's "Flying in a Blue Dream," Johnson's "Zap," and Vai's "The Attitude Song." The three play together in a three-song finale of "Going Down," "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama," and "Red House" that blends technique, showmanship, and friendship into an energetic, entertaining performance that will please all of the guitarists' fans. The DVD's biographies and Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound are nice extras for diehards and audiophiles. ~ Heather Phares G3 LIVE IN CONCERT matches six-time Grammy Award nominee Joe Satriani with three-time Grammy nominee Steve Vai, and Grammy winner Eric Johnson. The CD documents the group's 1996 North American tour, and features three tracks apiece by each of the guitarists as well as three no-holds-barred jams featuring all three axe-men. G3 LIVE IN CONCERT is sure to please all lovers of guitar wizardry. This high-energy CD showcases the eclectic compositional skills of the three men, with tracks featuring everything from pumped-up fusion grooves to funk-infused rhythms and jazz-flavored numbers. Each tune, though, is really a vehicle for the soaring guitar pyrotechnics for which Vai, Satriana and Johnson are famous. G3 Live In Concert
$15.29 Personnel: Robben Ford (vocals, guitar); Neal Evans (Hammond b-3 organ); Toss Panos (drums). Audio Mixer: John Paterno. Photographer: George Wells. Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy generated by the stage environment, focuses attention on the guitarist's skills as a creative six-string bluesman who expands the narrow confines of the genre by adding soul and jazz influences. He kicks off the set with a lazy, wah-wah enhanced "Supernatural," the title track to his 1999 disc, and revs up the energy from there, jumping into the instrumental "Indianola." This is where Ford seamlessly combines rock, blues, jazz, and surf into a five-minute tour de force, leading one to believe that a vocal-free show might display his superb guitar talents even better. Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song ...
| | Herbie Hancock Gershwin's World CD (1998) Hybrid; SACD Hybrid
G3 Live In Concert
$15.49 GERSHWIN'S WORLD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. "St. Louis Blues" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s). This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Gershwin's World is a tour de force for Herbie Hancock, transcending genre and label, and ranking among the finest recordings of his lengthy career. Released to coincide with the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin's birth, this disc features jazzman Hancock with a classy collection of special guests. The most surprising of Hancock's guest stars is Joni Mitchell, who delivers a gorgeously sensual vocal on "The Man I Love," then provides an airy, worldly take on "Summertime." On these two tracks, she shows she has come a long way from her folksinger beginnings to become a first-class jazz singer in her own right. Stevie Wonder's unmistakable harmonica complements Mitchell's singing on "Summertime" and shares lead instrument space with his own voice on the W.C. Handy classic "St. Louis Blues." Jazzman extraordinaire Wayne Shorter smokes a solo spot on Duke Ellington's ...
| | Ted Nash Mancini Project CD (2008)
G3 Live In Concert
$13.65 Personnel: Ted Nash (alto flute, piccolo); Frank Kinbrough, Frank Kimbrough (piano); Rufus Reid (upright bass); Matt Wilson (drums). Recording information: Maggie's Farm, Buck's County, PA (12/18/2007/12/19/2007). One of the greatest movie composers is the late Henry Mancini, whose works adorn four decades' worth (from the '50s through the '80s) of good to great films. Jazz saxophonist Ted Nash, whose father Dick and uncle Ted frequently worked with Mancini, has now fashioned an exemplary tribute to him called, fittingly enough, THE MANCINI PROJECT. (While not strictly speaking a jazz composer, Mancini drew upon jazz for inspiration and featured several fine jazz soloists.) Here, the younger Nash has arranged 14 Mancini gems for small group, featuring his poised flute and fine, hearty, occasionally breathy tenor sax. Above all, Nash clearly loves the Hollywood composer's melodies, such as the sleek "Dreamsville" from PETER GUNN and the little heard "Two For The Road," and gives them respectful but also creative and exhilarating interpretations. No one can accuse Ted Nash of favoring an "all warhorses all the time" policy; in other words, he isn't the type of jazz instrumentalist ...

G3 Live In Concert
$27.85 Personnel includes: Gregg Allman (vocals, keyboards); Lori Yates (vocals); Dan Toler, David "Frankie" Toler, Tim Heding, Chaz Trippy, Bruce Waibel, Bill Stewart, Harvey Thompson. Producers include: Rodney Mills, Tom Dowd, Johnny Sandlin, Steve Buckingham, Timothy Eaton. Compilation producer: Jeff Magid. Recorded between 1985 & 1998. Includes liner notes by Jaan Uhelszki. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Even if you accept that a best-of for Gregg Allman can focus wholly on his solo career (as this one does) and not include any of his work with the Allman Brothers, this could not by any stretch be considered "the best of Gregg Allman." It's really the best of what he's recorded for Sony, which is really an entirely different animal. That means there's nothing from his three 1970s albums, which most listeners would view as containing his best solo work; the chronological stretch on this comp only covers the last half of the 1980s and the 1990s. Like, say, Rod Stewart, this was a time in which his recordings had really only a shadow of their old power, although (like Stewart) his voice was still ...
