2004 release from the former guitarist of Mountain & West Bruce & Laing.
Releasing "all covers" albums can amount to either one of two things. Either the artist doing the covering is buying time between real albums or the artist doing the covering really wants to give some attention back to his musical heroes, who helped shape his playing early on. Over the years, former Mountain singer/guitarist Leslie West has recorded quite a few covers, quite a few of which are featured on a 2005 release (that sported an un-PC title), Guitarded. Focusing on old blues numbers and rock tracks from the late '60s, West proves that he can still let his fingers fly all these years later. Standouts here include a fine, bluesy take of the Beatles' obscure "Old Brown Shoe," as well as West covering an old Mountain tune (which late singer/bassist Felix Pappalardi sang originally), "Theme for an Imaginary Western." But now for the bad: how many more times can you hear a cover version of the Stones' "Honey Tonk Women" (hasn't every single bar band since the early '70s played this?), while an overhaul of Steppenwolf's "Born to Be Wild" (another classic rock tune that certainly doesn't need to be covered for the 50 zillionth time) falls flat. It has its moments, but overall, Guitarded will be of interest only to Leslie West fanatics. ~ Greg Prato
Personnel: Leslie West; Gregg Allman, Ian Gillan, Joe Lynn Turner, Leo Lyons, Popa Chubby, Aynsley Dunbar, Mark Clarke.
Leslie West Guitarded Songs Guitarded Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) Climbing a new "Mountain" Wow! Despite the "politically uncorrect" title, Leslie demonstrates that he still has what it take and what drew us to him in the first place. Rocking guitar tastefully updated with just a hint of the past. Greatfully, Leslie continues to grace us with his art in spite of the temptation to quit which can inevitabally arise when you just might be an "oldie but a goody" Yes, Mountain is still there with an updated take on "Theme from an Imgainary Western" but, more importantly, the soul of man is expressed beautifully in a variety of new studio and live takes. You could "waste your money" on something less adventurous, but when all is said and done, Leslie continues to satisfy and to call us all back to what drew us there in the beginning. Soulful integrity with the instrument and the voice. Do yourself (and Leslie) a favor. Go out and buy this CD! Submitted by ecvclamper (Monterey, California) Was This Review Helpful? VERY PLEASENT SUPRISE ! Leslie West is not only Guitarded , he's a mutant! This is a really COOL CD. Wide variety of music and styles. Born to be Wild version very different. With most of his other works , you can tell it's him (playing) not so this time around. Some of his most versatile work ever. Submitted by roadruin (Wheaton Md. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$13.45 Leslie West isn't a particularly innovative guitarist, and his style and approach have barely moved an eyelash since he first broke into the public consciousness with Mountain back in the early '70s, but boy can this guy get tone! West still sings with a gear-shredding roar and his guitar lines sound heavier than plutonium on this set of blues-rockers, and if he doesn't exactly do anything that he hasn't done before, his laser-on-steroids precision as a guitar player ...

Guitarded album
$5.25 Assembeled and remastered at The Village Recorder, Los Angeles by Ed Michel and Baker Bigsby.
There's no shortage of albums in this world entitled either THE BEST OF B.B. KING or some variation thereof. Fortunately, the inestimably influential blues guitarist has a colossal and consistently impressive discography that warrants a couple of dozen best-of compilations.
At 10 tracks, EMI's 2006 collection is a basic primer on King, featuring a full roster of the legendary performer's straightforward, soulful vocals and smooth, perfectly phrased fret work. There's no "The Thrill Is Gone" or "Caldonia" here, but King's take on "Everyday (I Have the Blues)" and the smooth swing of "Why I Sing the Blues" more than compensate. The lack of liner notes and recording information will frustrate some listeners, but it won't detract from the excellent music on offer.
This solid three-CD boxed set overview of B.B. King's post-1960s career contains favorites like "The Thrill Is Gone" and "How Blue Can You Get?" as well Stevie Wonder's "To Know You Is to Love You," the latter an example of the master guitarist's impeccable taste in choosing songs to suit his style. King's late-1960s resurgence as an influence on young ...
