THE DANA OWENS ALBUM is Queen Latifah's first non-rap vocal album.
Throughout a career that started in the early days of hip-hop, Queen Latifah has consistently proven herself a woman of kaleidoscopic talents. The ultimate evidence of her versatility came in 2002, when she took on the role of "Mama" Morton in the film version of the musical CHICAGO, displaying acting chops polished enough to earn her an Academy Award nomination. In that movie, Queen Latifah also revealed an exquisite and powerful singing voice. The latter is put to good use on her 2004 record THE DANA OWENS ALBUM, a collection of (mostly) standards given full orchestral treatment.
To Latifah's credit, THE DANA OWENS ALBUM is an immense success, boasting her tremendous voice and an intelligent, provocative song selection. To put things in perspective, on "Simply Beautiful," she duets with the song's writer, the incomparable Al Green, and not only holds her own, but plays off him in the most natural of styles. On the most precarious cover on the record, she re-arranges the Mamas & the Papas' "California Dreamin'" into a breathy torch song, while retaining just a touch of the folk-imbued original. Queen Latifah closes the set with a masterful performance of the classic "Lush Life," a fitting ending to an entirely anachronistic record.
Personnel: Queen Latifah (vocals); David "Fathead" Newman , Al Green (vocals); John Goux (guitar); Dan Higgins, Joel Peskin, Pete Christlieb, Brandon Fields (saxophone); James Moody (alto saxophone); Gary Grant, Larry Lunetta, Charles Davis (trumpet); Dick Nash , Bryant Breyers, Bruce Otto (trombone); Herbie Hancock, Jim Cox (piano); Peter Erskine, Vinnie Colaiuta (drums); Luis Conte (percussion); Mervyn Warren. The "Other Side of Queen Latifah" After seeing the movie Chicago and hearing Queen Latifah sing jazz, I had to purchase this CD. I definitely was NOT disappointed. She has a wonderful jazz voice and I really hopes she comes out with another jazz cd. Definitely one talented woman. Submitted by mcgowan (Okinawa, Japan) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Outstanding Queen Latifah continues to improve in all aspects of her entertainment career so this offering is not a surprise to me that it is as good as it is. I enjoy all the cuts on the CD and hope this will just be the beginning of a number of offerings of this caliber from this very talented lady.

$10.39 Though Ray Charles, one of the greatest singers of the 20th century, was never in need of vocal assistance, he was no stranger to duets either (one of his finest records is a duet album with Betty Carter). For as much of a musical giant as he was, Brother Ray knew how to share the spotlight, as evidenced by GENIUS LOVES COMPANY, his final project before his 2004 passing. In keeping with ...

| | Eoghan Quigg CD (2009)
Dana Owens Album music CDs
$23.69 Excellent 2009 debut album from this young Irish X Factor favorite, who impressed the judges and charmed the nation. Features the radio single '28,000 Friends' and tracks he performed on X Factor: 'Ben' and 'Never Forget'. Sony/BMG.
Despite the huge success of Leona Lewis, the signs aren't particularly encouraging for any X-Factor contestant looking for career longevity. Leon Jackson and Same Difference were dropped within weeks of their debut albums' release, Steve Brookstein, Ben Mills, and Journey South have faded back into obscurity, and only Rhydian and Shayne Ward still have their record deals intact. Sixteen-year-old Eoghan Quigg, is the latest to emerge from the reality TV conveyor belt. One of the most divisive contestants in the show's history, the young Irishman appealed to housewives wanting to mother him, and pre-teen girls eager for a U.K. High School Musical-style icon of their own, but left everyone else scratching their heads wondering how he even made it past the audition stages. His self-titled debut album, ...
