| | Very Best Of Earl Bostic CD (2004)
Only The Strong Survive album
$12.15 The Very Best of Earl Bostic is a 25-track overview of his jump blues and R&B instrumentals recorded for King in the late '40s and '50s. Bostic's biggest R&B hits, including "Temptation" "Flamingo," and "Sleep," are coupled with favorites like "Earl Blows a Fuse," "Rockin' and Reelin'," and one of the few vocal tracks Bostic cut, "Who Snuck the Wine in the Gravy." This Collectables reissue is a decent set for casual Bostic fans, but those who want to go deeper into his catalog should check into the chronological Blues & Rhythm Series on Classics. As a side note, John Coltrane was part of Bostic's band in the early '50s, and makes an appearance on the cuts "Moonglow," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," and "For You." ~ Al Campbell

| | DJ Rhettmatic Exclusive Collection CDs (2004)
Only The Strong Survive CD music
$14.09 Disc 2 is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Rhettmatic.
Japan's Manhattan Records (a record store and distribution company) and Los Angeles' Up Above Records present one CD of new and exclusive tracks that get mixed together by DJ Rhettmatic on the second disc. Maybe the cover art makes the former Beat Junkie look like he's a lot more involved with Exclusive Collection than he is, but if that's what it takes to get these great tracks to people's ears, so be it. Disc one is filled with highlights. Plenty of hip-hoppers hate when producer Tony Touch picks up the mike, but "We See Y'All" is one of the great, freewheeling things that happens when he does and a perfect cut for the Rhettmatic mix. Rhettmatic's crew, the Visionaries, offer up a thrilling ride on "Hindsight," with rapper 2Mex overcoming a clunky sample from Queen's "Flash's Theme." Pete Rock is ultra-smooth, Jay Dee is a ghetto-fabulous Gil Scott-Heron, and the two cuts from Geology along with one from the Omen offer up killer hooks that stick in the head. That's a lot of great underground rap without any overly academic aftertaste, and Rhettmatic makes it all sound like a party on disc two. Some extra scratch interludes and a few new tracks get added on Rhettmatic's mix, and the DJ blends the beats with wit and precision. Shout-outs and phoned-in praise for the DJ give the set a happening mixtape feel, making it the disc to cruise with. ~ David Jeffries

| | Camille Jackson Star-Eyed Siren CD (2007)
Only The Strong Survive CD music
$16.45 At once joyous and sultry, Camille Jackson's debut album oozes raw talent. This Portland based singer-songwriter has pulled out all the stops to create a mature and catchy collection of songs. Inspired by the best in blues and bluegrass, Jackson crafts songs that pay homage to tradition but still retain their own voice.Released in December 2006, Star-Eyed Siren features Portland, Oregon musical legends Tony Furtado on slide guitar, Peter Schwimmer (formerly of the great bluegrass group, Sam Hill) on banjo, bass, mandolin, and lead guitar, Dr. Theopolis front man Ezra Holbrook on drums, and the great Diana Ross pianist, George Mitchell. Also featuring the country licks of Paul Hirschmann on pedal steel guitar and dobro, the beautiful violin and viola work of Eddie Parente, and the tasteful blues sounds of Spigot harmonica player, David Lipkind, Jackson has assembled a stellar group of players to round out this refreshingly colorful mix of tunes. Part folk, part bluegrass, a little bit of country and a whole lot of soul, this album crosses from one genre to another with little chance of being pigeonholed into one style. At the same time, the album’s surprises are delivered seamlessly from one song to another, all while managing to grab your attention again and again throughout this emotive work. While “Drinking For Two” and “Jesus’ ...
