(1 Customer Review)
In 2004, the Apples in Stereo took a break and various members went to work on solo projects. Head Apple Robert Schneider hooked up with three musicians from his new hometown of Lexington, KY, formed Ulysses, and went the minimalist route. .010 was recorded live around one microphone in Schneider's garage with some vocal and synth overdubs added later. The result is predictably lo-fi and raw, with the sound built around buzzing analog synths and Schneider's clanging rhythm guitar. His songs are more direct as well, with simple chord changes and song structures framing personal lyrics that are mostly untempered by whimsy and driven by heartbreak and separation. Schneider's vocals are still on the cute side but surprisingly emotional; he often breaks into a speaker-rattling shout that is very out of character but very cool. At times recalling some of the beautifully bleak work of the Wedding Present around the time of Seamonsters, at times a barely under control Pavement circa Slanted & Enchanted, Ulysses casts aside any vestiges of neo-psych and heads right to the indie rock mainline. "Television," "Glacier," and "Change" all sound like they could have come out in 1992. If they had, listeners might be getting deluxe editions of .010 right about now and songs like the hooky "Burning You" and "Evening Star" would be on alt-rock classics compilations. That's not to say that when Schneider traded in his membership in the Elephant 6 psych club, he traded in his ability to craft splendid melodies, because he still can play that way. Now he uses his talents to break hearts ("The Falcon," "Her Silver Veil") instead of to make you giggle and swoon. Elephant 6 fans might not know quite what to make of a record that is so simple and honest; hopefully, they will give it a chance because it is as strong musically as anything the Apples in Stereo have done and 100 times as powerful emotionally. ~ Tim Sendra
Member Of Apples In StereoUncut (p.76) - 3 stars out of 5 - "'Burning You', and the spirit of Pavement, the Velvets and Euro droners like Spiritualized infuse the mix....Give Ulysses' tales time. They might turn classic." Magnet (p.67) - Ranked #19 in Magnet's "The 20 Best Albums Of 2004" - "Robert Schneider is charting some very different brainwaves. His bubblegum pop has turned from sweet to bittersweet..." Ulysses .010 Songs | 1. | Push You Away |

.010 album
$15.09 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of such ostensibly laconic tunes as "Lonely Girls" and "Righteously." Meanwhile, songs that already had plenty of bite in their studio versions are pumped up to an even more electrifying, visceral level (a bold, crunching "Changed the Locks;" the roaring, bluesy "Joy"). The debt Williams and her ...
| | Andrew Bird Mysterious Production Of Eggs CD (2005)
.010 CD music
$13.09 On THE MYSTERIOUS PRODUCTION OF EGGS, Andrew Bird's second studio outing for Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe label, the classically trained violinist presents another set of charmingly quirky chamber-pop. Easily one of Bird's most spare and stripped-down albums, EGGS find the Chicago-based singer-songwriter handling many of the instrumental duties, resulting in an intimate and often hypnotic atmosphere, as best evinced on the woozy "Measuring Cups" and the mesmerizing, Beatlesque "Opposite Day." (Bird also shows off his wonderful whistling talents on "A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left" and "Masterfade.") ...
| | Beck Guero CD (2005)
.010 music CDs
$12.99 "E-Pro" kicks off the festivities with a heavy guitar riff and a Beastie Boys-sampled beat, while "Que Onda Guero" revels in a sunny Latin vibe, with Beck rapping (surprisingly well) in Spanish. However, this outing also offers up MUTATIONS-worthy melodic pop, particularly on "Girl," a brilliantly catchy tune carried along by acoustic guitar, handclaps, and lush vocal harmonies. Beck's reunion with sound sculptors Mike Simpson and John King (the Dust Brothers) breathes plenty of life into these tracks, including the heavily percussive "Black Tambourine" and the '70s-inspired "Earthquake Weather." Jack White (of the famously bass-less White Stripes) lends a bluesy bass line to "Go It Alone," while many of Beck's longtime musicians (guitarist Smokey Hormel, bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen) turn up throughout the record. An album that features Beck energetically ...

| | Jonny Lives Get Steady CD (2006)
.010 album
$12.95 Not to be confused with an EP of the same name (and released the same year), "Get Steady" is the full-length debut by the New York City quartet, Jonny Lives. Usually when a new band offers an EP before a full-length, a few non-album tracks will be featured. But this turns out not to be the case with the "Get Steady" full-length, as all of the EP's five tracks are included -- making the earlier release completely obsolete. Either way, the highlights of the EP also turn out to be the highlights here -- singer/guitarist/songwriter Jonny Dubowsky lists classic British Invasion bands as his prime influence, but Weezer automatically comes to mind with such tracks as "Get Steady" and especially "Lost My Mind." Elsewhere, "Diamonds and Roses" sounds like a more polished ...
