As a result of its legendary DIY work ethic and ferocious live performances, California punk band AFI (A Fire Inside) has developed the type of intensely loyal fanbase of which even many big-name acts can only dream. For those completists who have been regularly shelling out more than $300 a pop for out-of-print AFI 7" singles on eBay, this collection of classic tracks and rarities comes as a blessing. A great introduction to a group that has been working hard since 1996, the disc showcases AFI's in-your-face mix of old-school punk, hardcore, thrash metal, art rock, and goth.
In many ways, the defining element of the band's sound is charismatic vocalist Davey Havok. Seemingly able to channel Iggy Pop, Johnny Rotten, Robert Smith, or Ian MacKaye according to the needs of the song, Havok spits out lyrics filled with doom-and-gloom imagery over a rhythm section that combines the heaviness of Anthrax with the brash energy and shout-along backing vocals of the Damned. Of course, this diverse approach to heavy music is part of what endears the band to the faithful, and this excellent overview should perk up a few extra ears.
This piece is a great introduction for AFI's newest fans into their deep catalog. Once they devour this piece of history, they'll be fans for life, anxious to own the band's early albums in order to complete their AFI collection Afi Music | List Price | $13.97 (You save $2.48) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs, Punk, Alternative | | Label | Nitro | | Orig Year | 2004 | | All Time Sales Rank | 34762 | | CD Universe Part number | 6779597 | | Catalog number | 15859 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Nov 02, 2004 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Chuck Johnson; AFI; Michael Rosen; Chuck Johnson; Michael Rosen; AFI |

Afi album
$13.09 A.F.I.'s second album features lots of warp-speed hardcore riffing topped with one-note melodies and lyrics dealing with various types of personal disillusionment (sample: "I can't be a part of your modern world"). The California quartet valiantly tries to keep hardcore alive, but doesn't put an individual stamp on the music to make it essential listening. ~ Andy Hinds

$12.69 The California foursome's second album betters its predecessor due to fuller production, but A.F.I.'s hurtling hardcore is still undistinguishable from countless similar bands. ~ Andy Hinds
Their debut album on CD for the first time ever. Completely remastered & now with the bonus track 'Open Your Eyes'. 15 blistering punk anthems that crowned them the kings of the East Bay scene. Their last has sold over 30,000copies to date. Currently on tour with Sick Of It All.

| | A F I Art Of Drowning CD (2000)
Afi album
$12.49 "My whole life is a dark room" is the sentiment expressed by AFI on the appropriately titled "The Despair Factor," and there's no denying the uniformly bleak outlook of this young band. If they made music to match, this would be a rather dull ride, but they work the contrast nicely by backing their worrisome lyrics with explosion after sonic explosion of blistering punk.
AFI might be said to practice a variant of horrorcore, but not of the stylized, play-acting, Slipknot kind. Rather, the group comes off as a junior branch of the Misfits, mating the grim and the grisly with energetic, old-school punk bashing, and even a fairly conventional melodic sense. For those who think Halloween rock started with Marilyn Manson, THE ART OF DROWNING will provide a quick and infectious history lesson.

| | A F I Sing The Sorrow CD (2003)
Afi CD music
$10.45 SING THE SORROW was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package.
With its major label debut SING THE SORROW, AFI (aka A Fire Inside), has made the leap from being strictly hardcore punk denizens to a more complex outfit dabbling in goth guitar textures and a soaring sound. With Nirvana/Smashing Pumpkins producer Butch Vig and Green Day/Rancid knob-twirler Jerry Finn manning the board, this transition ends up being a smooth one. Swirling synths, disembodied harmonies and the Tool-like bashing of drummer Adam Carson help the foreboding "Miseria Cantare" set a mood closer to Dead Can Dance than the Dead Kennedys. Although "Death of Season" predominantly rides a hardcore vibe, the most obvious indicators that this ain't your older brother's punk rock are "The Leaving Song Pt. II," with its sing-along-chorus and pounding rhythm, the dark Cult-like rocker "Bleed Black," and "This Celluloid Dream," a charged anthem of vulnerability.
Further indications that AFI successfully straddles the worlds of mainstream acceptance and street credibility are radio-friendly songs like "The Leaving Song" and "The Great Disappointment" featuring Jade Puget's melodic riffing and Davey Havok's heartfelt crooning. This Bay Area quartet seals the innovative SING THE SORROW with "Girl's Not Grey," a perfect pop-punk song that rides along on catchy, chanting harmonies and churning guitar.
Recorded at Cello Studios, Los Angeles, California.

$21.89 In the summer of 1998 -- and again in 2005 -- Sony repackaged and re-released Aerosmith's first three albums -- Aerosmith, Get Your Wings, and Toys in the Attic -- as a slip-cased box set. Since this box set features the remastered versions from 1993, it's a good bargain in one sense; if you haven't replaced your old CDs or want to acquire all of these albums at once, this is a convenient way to do it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Sukay Return Of The Inca CD (1991)
Afi songs
$11.21 Sukay's 1991 release, Return of the Inca, is an exciting blend of ancient Indian music with today's contemporary style. The songs are based on Andean melodies dating from 1200 BCE when the Quechua Indians were forming the basis of the Incan Empire. Eddie Navia, charango player, wrote many of the compositions. The international touring and recording group SUKAY has performed in thousands of venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall, Smithsonian Institute and in concerts on world class stages and festivals from the Yukon to China."Dazzling the listener with a display of complete musicality that defied the limitations of ther instruments" -Washington Post. . . an overflow-capacity crowd on its feet in a wash of thunderous applause." -Tucson Citizen Eddy Navia Born in Potosà Bolivia, Eddy is a composer and one of the greatest exponents and master virtuosos of the charango, a traditional Bolivian stringed instrument. Like an orchestra, Sukay draws from a broad palette of exotic sounds: the deep, sharp, airy lasts of the medieval-sounding toyos (pan pipes with graduated tubes up to 5 feet long); the high, vocal inflections of the kena (notched flute); the shimmering ring of the charango (a mandolin-like instrument made from an armadillo shell); and the resonant tones and muted percussive drive of the classical guitar.Sukay was founded by Quentin Navia and is directed by Bolivia's great composer and virtuoso of the charango, Eddy Navia.

| | Very Best Of David Wilcox CD (2001)
Afi album
$12.15 The Very Best of David Wilcox is drawn from only the second, third, and fourth albums of a singer/songwriter who had recorded eight albums by the time of its release, which should give a good idea of its completeness. Wilcox signed to A&M Records in 1989 after issuing his debut album, Nightshift Watchman, himself, and he made three albums for the label before being cut loose in 1994 after failing to sell records in sufficiently large numbers to justify a big record contract. This 20-track compilation of that five-year period in his career includes seven cuts from his six-figure-selling second album and A&M debut, How Did You Find Me Here, six from its follow-up, Home Again, and appropriately, only four from the troubled third collection, Big Horizon (plus, ironically, one of the recordings from the first version of that album, which A&M rejected at the time). The choices are good, and they emphasize the consistency of Wilcox's work. Two bonuses spice things up: "Johnny's Camaro" (later featured on the 1996 live set East Asheville Hardware) and "Daddy's Money" (first heard on Nightshift Watchman) are presented in live versions drawn from A&M promotional discs. Both are humorous songs that reveal Wilcox's wit and satiric bite, talents not much on display in the more serious and sometimes oh-so-sensitive songs on his studio recordings. There are plenty of equally impressive tunes on later albums released on Koch and Vanguard, but the novice should get a good idea of Wilcox's style on this album, even if it doesn't actually span his career. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Uriah Heep Blood On The Stone CD (2001) (Import)
Afi CD music
$23.65 Blood On Stone picks up where Travellers In Time left off, spilling liberal draughts of Firefly, Abominog, Head First, Raging Silence, Different World and the albums in between across two discs. Maybe they should have called it Blood From A Stone. Not that the post-High And Mighty Heep didn't have some high points of their own, but two discs' worth? Part of the problem stems from licensing issues: Equator, Sea of Light and Sonic Origami were apparently off limits to Castle, so the label was forced to spread the remains thin. The Best of... Part 2, which covered the same terrain over a single disc, had the luxury of leaving tracks like "When The War Is Over" and "Firefly" off the guest list. That disc managed to hide the cracks, which Blood On Stone exposes anew. So while this compilation does a fine job of following the band's footsteps after David Byron's departure, few are likely to appreciate the effort. Anyone willing to wade this deep into Uriah Heep's discography already has some of these albums in their collection (e.g., Abominog, Firefly, Innocent Victim) and isn't likely to rush out and buy Different World based on hearing "All God's Children" or "Which Way Will The Wind Blow." Including the non-album single "Love Stealer" isn't much of an enticement either, since it can be had on the expanded reissue of Conquest. In a perfect world, Castle (or someone) would find a way to reconcile Uriah Heep's recent releases with their Bronze recordings; then you'd have a nice double disc in the offing. Blood On Stone instead draws too much music from anemic albums, weakening the case that the band's second phase was as vital as its first. ~ Dave Connolly
