Following their critically acclaimed Sky's Run Into the Sea, Growing played an exclusive, select number of shows including one at the behest of Mogwai for All Tomorrow's Parties in the U.K.. Returning with full momentum to the studio, the group recorded several sessions and downsized the group to become a duo of guitar and bass in the process. The results find Growing presenting their most challenging release to date; one that requires patience from the listener as they weave and explore every facet of their musical instrument set-up with great curiosity. Starting off with the gentle "Onement," the duo take an unexpected shift into the quiet and contemplative; layering church organ drones against guitar feedback and field recordings of nature sounds before building up to a crescendo that brings the rest of the album into focus and the familiar territory that Growing calls home. Meandering guitar drones, exercises in feedback manipulation and oscillation and brutally distorted melodies before coming full circle and returning to the lushness of the album's opener with "Primitive Associations/Great Mass Above." To end on such a soft note is somewhat of a daring move for a group whose live sets have a reputation for being punishing on the eardrums, but it also is a reflection of the maturity and sonic versatility that Growing has to offer. It's also what sets them apart from the ocean of drone practitioners who insist upon using waves of loud feedback as a rule of thumb, making it one of the best of its kind in 2004.~ Rob TheakstonUncut (p.146) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[B]eautifully phased guitar and bas hums....There's also a sense of an immense, tethered rock power..." The Wire (p.66) - "This time the drones are more solid and gigantic, rising up like columns of natural light which, although ephemeral, are held aloft with a definite sense of structure." Mojo (Publisher) (p.99) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[A] shimmering, shifting wash of layered guitars, manipulated tones and bottomless drone." | | Amen Corner If Paradise Was Half As Nice: The Immediate Anthology CD (2000)
Soul Of The Rainbow And The Harmony Of Light music CDs
$24.45 IF PARADISE WAS HALF AS NICE compiles Amen Corner's 2 LPs on the Immediate label: THE NATIONAL WELSH COAST LIVE EXPLOSION COMPANY (1969) and FARWELL TO THE REAL MAGNIFICANT SEVEN (1969). It also includes singles releases, out-takes and rarities.
The 35 songs on this double-CD set represent the output of Amen Corner on Immediate Records from 1968 through 1970. Listening to the 23 tracks on the first disc, one gets a good idea of the group's sound, and also why certain kinds of English pop/rock never transferred well to American shores. Amen Corner was spirited (even frenzied) enough in their playing and singing, but they also came off as a very lightweight group, without a lot of depth -- mostly that was true of their singles, but the singles were what defined them. The septet's primary audience was a peculiarly youthful English public, and appealing to them meant generating music that was upbeat but very superficial, along the lines of the Tremeloes, but without the in-house writing talent or the same ear for a good song. "(If Paradise Is) Half as Nice" is a pleasant, catchy track, as are "Hello Susie" (though their version of the Roy Wood tune is bubblegum pop next to the Move's recording on Shazam) and most of the rest, but they all seem more like songs that are pleasant to hear rather than to play -- that is, they're fine on the radio, but to ears belonging to anyone over the age of, say, 16, they're not the kind of music that one runs out to buy. Still, there was a fair amount of talent in evidence -- beyond Neil Jones' spirited guitar playing, keyboard man Blue Weaver added interesting organ fills, and on numbers like "Mr. Nonchalant" (an Andy Fairweather Low composition, and one of their better originals), they do achieve a more expansive sound. Fairweather Low was strongly influenced by American soul music in his singing, but finding the balance between that and the pop/rock sound that sold for the group was a near-impossible task, at least in the ...

Soul Of The Rainbow And The Harmony Of Light songs
$13.05 Janet Bean And The Concertina Wire: Janet Bean (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Jon Speigel (acoustic guitar, steel guitar, petal-steel guitar); Douglas McCombs (guitar); Fred Lonberg-Holm (cornet, cello, Nyckelharpa); Jim Baker (piano, electric piano, synthesizer); John Abbey (bass); Dan Leali (drums); Kelly Hogan (background vocals).
After 17 years in the music business, Janet Bean's debut album, Dragging Wonder Lake, is something of a revelation. Although she shared vocal and songwriting duties with her other two bands (Eleventh Dream Day and Freakwater), Dragging Wonder Lake showcases Bean's talents in a very different context and in full bloom in a way that may surprise people familiar with her other work. This album is musically a continuation of the "cosmic American music" pioneered by Gram Parsons and carried on by his protégée, Emmylou Harris; it's a sprawling amalgam of country and rock, with warm, organic production courtesy of John McEntire. There's weepy pedal steel on a few tracks, and the lap steel playing of John Spiegel strongly recalls David Lindley's work with Jackson Browne at times. Bandmembers Fred Lonberg-Holm (cello) and Jim Baker (piano) are best-known for their presence in the Chicago improv community, but prove here ...
