This 2-DVD set features a concert taped on April 26, 2004, at the famed Budokan in Tokyo, Japan. Disc One is the complete live concert. Disc two is packed with special features including a Japanese tour documentary, guitar/keyboard/drum solos, the tour opening video and a multiangle version of "Instrumedley." Heavy metal rockers Dream Theater are a high-energy, progressive outfit whose music is characterized by the virtuoso guitar work of member John Petrucci, and the consistently innovative, quality records they produce. They are most recognized, however, for their live performances; Dream Theater have become one of the most bootlegged bands around, and this release truly demonstrates why. Recorded at Tokyo's Budokan in 2004, the live show features an energetic, raw performance of their music that is by turns intense, beautiful, and aggressive; also included are band interviews and backstage footage. The set list includes: "Pull Me Under," "Trial of Tears," "Solitary Shell," "Disappear," and "In the Name of God," among many others. Amazing Every time that Dream Theater releases a new DVD or CD is better, yeah, it is.
Magnific musical pieces, especially drums, and you have 12 mins. watching just the drums in the second DVD. Submitted by allanchito (Guatemala City) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Above & Beyond! Anybody who listens to progressive rock and appreciates EXTRAORDINARY talent should own this concert. Petrucci is a master, and while the viewer sees and hears what he's playing, it's still hard to believe anyone can be THAT good! Not slighting the other guys, who are equally phenomenal: James LaBrie, John Myung, Mike Portnoy, Jordan Rudess -- all above & beyond -- this show will keep the viewer transfixed! With their progressive metal style and exceptional musicianship (learned at the Berklee School of Music) Dream

| | Dream Theater Octavarium CD (2005)
Dream Theater - Live at Budokan review
$10.59 As the sole major-label progressive-metal act, Dream Theater invariably set the standard as the flagship band of the genre. With the numerically themed OCTAVARIUM (including eight tracks signifying the band's eighth release) the shred-rock quintet continues to challenge themselves creatively. Opening track "The Root Of All Evil" picks up the thread that began with "The Glass Prison" (SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE) and carried forward to "This Dying Soul" (TRAIN OF THOUGHT). Drummer Mike Portnoy's lyrics for these songs read like a set of deeply personal journal entries documenting his painful recovery experience, further disclosed by a footnote nod to Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson. OCTAVARIUM chiefly finds Dream Theater stepping back from elaborate fretboard acrobatics, focusing on vocal-based, song-oriented material ("I Walk Beside You," "The Answer Lies Within"); much in the spirit of AWAKE ...

Dream Theater - Live at Budokan video
$11.05 TRAIN OF THOUGHT continues the legacy of the progressive metal legends, with all the requisite superhuman metallic musicianship that their fans have come to expect. This outing continues in the heavier mode that began with 2002's SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE, reaching even further into darker, personal lyrical themes.
Guitars are the dominant expressive voice here, with keyboards scaled considerably back from the signature Dream Theater sound. Band members Mike Portnoy (drums) and John Petrucci (guitar) continue their do-it-yourself production approach, opting for recording venues on their native Long Island (much of the band's album work has taken place in upstate New York at Bear Tracks and Little Bear Studios). "As I Am" and "This Dying Soul" at times borrow generously from Metallica, featuring that band's well-known use of tri-tones, and vocalist James LaBrie even tries his hat at some Hetfield-isms. Possibly due to Petrucci's tenure on the G3 Tour (with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai), TRAIN finds him returning to Dream Theater wielding an even more lethal guitar soloing style. Of all the new tracks, the instrumental "Stream of Consciousness" sounds in closest proximity to the band's earlier material, and, for longtime fans, ...
