Vast reverb and sound effects are used here to give the tunes a highly processed sheen. This release also incorporates musical elements from techno and trance. The most intriguing track on this album is "Night City," which features an old-school reggae beat and a deep-pocketed bass riff. However, other tracks, including "Space-Time Paradox" and "Dystopia," also use memorable, funky grooves. In each case, they are supplemented by an array of atmospheric keyboards and other spacey studio effects.
Bill Laswell sets out on this release to create non-traditional dub music. While dub has its roots in 1960s Jamaica, a more contemporary version borrows from Britain's electronica movement. Given this, it's no surprise to see UK conceptualist Jah Wobble involved. Together Laswell and Wobble tinker and remix an assortment of bass-heavy grooves.
Personnel: Bill Laswell; Jah Wobble, Abdou M'Boup, Bernie Worrell.
The Wire (p.70) - "[H]e continues on a self-styled neverending dub caravan..." New Age Retailer (19, p.123) - "A fabulous choice for play during cold winter weather..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Laswell has effectively created his own sub-genre of dub....There are enough subtle shifts in rhythm, texture and melody - including some impressively dissolving guitar solos - to suggest there's still plenty more for Laswell to explore in this area." | | Elton John Big Picture CD (1997)
Version 2 Version: A Dub Transmission songs
$10.59 As true as the Rolling Stones have remained to their blues beat, Elton John, who's been around nearly as long, has stayed true to his pop muse; and perhaps more than the Stones, he's retained his pop craft. THE BIG PICTURE is a simple album at heart, a collection of melancholy love songs beefed up with million-dollar pop arrangements and rocked up every now and then with Davey Johnstone's electric guitar. The sentiments are basic enough: in "The End Will Come," he's ready to swear there ain't no mountain high enough to stop his love, while in "Love's Got A Lot To Answer For," he's ready to admit that no matter how he climbs there's just going to be another mountain around the bend.
Lyricist Bernie Taupin provides these basics, and John adds the incredible melodic weight that the best of these songs have. "Long Way From Happiness" is haunting blue-eyed soul; ...
| | Best Of James Taylor CD (2003)
Version 2 Version: A Dub Transmission album
$10.35 When his debut appeared in 1968, James Taylor was the first non-Beatle to release an album on the Fabs' Apple label. Since then, his long, consistent career has been a model of integrity and craft. While he hasn't ventured very far afield as say, his contemporary Joni Mitchell has), Taylor has maintained the gentle, introspective, archetypal singer-songwriter sound he defined over his first couple of albums. Eschewing quantity for quality, he remains a perennial favorite even with infrequent releases of new material.
THE BEST OF JAMES TAYLOR is the first collection to combine tracks from his three labels, rounding the set out with the newly recorded "Bittersweet." Though Taylor was among the first to usher in the era of autobiographical singer-songwriters, he also had a number of hits covering others (from Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet it Is" to Carole King's "You've Got a Friend)." The 20 songs here cover the arc of his career, serving to remind that not only do his early recordings remain essential components to the soundtrack of their era, but that Taylor remains one of the smo

Version 2 Version: A Dub Transmission CD music
$18.39 This can be seen as the third installment in the series of Nick Cave albums that started with 1997's THE BOATMAN'S CALL; like it's two predecessors, NOCTURAMA is full of stately piano ballads, and largely absent of the barbed-wire rantings that typified Cave's earlier recordings. While past albums painted Cave as the grisly Edgar Allen Poe of rock, NOCTURAMA and its brethren take a marked turn toward more personal, sometimes even romantic themes. ...
